It's fantastic to see LITAC featured in Frontiers in an article authored by Alice Hazlehurst, Dr Mark Sumner and Dr Mark Taylor. The article addresses their recent research on how changes to fibre composition and the systems used to spin yarn can reduce the release of microfibres from textiles and their harmful impacts on the environment. Through the use of a washing simulator, the research team, led by Alice, tested various densities of yarns in unknitted hanks and knitted forms, and compared how much microfibre they released when washed. The research found that: ▶ Polyester fibre appeared to suffer less damage than cotton fibre during the knitting process. ▶ Microfibre release in tightly knitted fabrics during laundering was reduced, but manufacturers should consider fibre fly – the fibre that is released from yarns during fabric manufacturing, which is higher when fabrics are tightly knitted. ▶ Vortex-spun yarns (based on air jet spinning) had a lower microfibre release than ring-spun yarns (where yarns are conventionally twisted). Ring-spun yarns tend to be ‘hairier’ than vortex-spun yarns, which has been shown to increase microfibre release in washing.
