How streets are related to each other have a direct impact in our daily life. This is not only a matter of the mobility use (shared space, segregated lanes, one-way streets, etc.), but also how the network of all streets works as a system. Here in Afurada (baixa), in VN de Gaia, there a clear division of the street network in several sub systems. There are urban parts with a fine grain street network that form a community because it provides a public space platform to meet and move. In proximity to residential programmes, shops and other functions. And in some areas, with some restrictions of the topography, there are complete isolated living areas, disconnected from its direct environment. ... As we approach the International Day for Monuments & Sites (IDMS) on April 18th, it's a timely reminder to discuss the importance of heritage preservation. Recent disclosures from the Ministry of Culture to Parliament reveal that approximately 50 ASI monuments are currently untraceable or lost. This underscores the urgent need for greater public awareness of our heritage sites to prevent further neglect, with responsibility not solely resting on ASI. The use of lighting has emerged as a potent tool for enhancing the heritage experience, fostering "Heritage Awareness," and potentially catalyzing tourism growth. While not every site requires elaborate lighting, adopting basic illumination that respects the character of the heritage can cultivate a sense of local community responsibility and commitment. Referring to the "broken window theory", being isolated may not help the conservation of all sites. For a few, community participation can give better results, re-establishing the connection with the locals. Lack of visibility and security, access after sunset is a common issue; therefore having necessary general lighting could make the places inviting for visitors & tourists, supporting conservation efforts. In India, effective heritage management requires broader engagement from both professionals and experts. Embracing technological advancements is crucial to ensuring the sustainable preservation and management of these invaluable sites. It's a matter of pride that now we have a lot of qualified professional experts working on this & with their persistent efforts through organizations like ICOMOS India & many more we are on track with elaborate plans being put in place for our Heritage conservation. As a continuation of my recent posts that focused on Lighting & Heritage, this post emphasizes the significance of "Lighting for Heritage," reflecting my stance on the matter. I invite your insights and opinions on this important topic. #LightingforHeritage #HeritageLighting #India #Lightingdesigners #DesignforHeritage #lightingdesign #Lightingdesignspecialists #ICOMOSIndia #ICOMOS ICOMOS India International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) #InternationaldayforMonumentsandSites #IDMS2024 #IDMS #DayforMonumentsandsites Archaeological Survey of India
