As 2011 comes to a close, it’s a perfect time to consider where we have come from and where we are going. This process of reflection and divination is occurring within industry commentators as well and, whilst there will no doubt be plenty of articles online looking back on how 2011 has gone, this one will be looking forward to what awaits us in 2012. The games industry is inevitably lead by franchises, and next year will see some particularly big sequels reign over the charts. Read on for the ten that are most likely to create some serious hubbub.

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 2 is considered one of the greatest modern RPGs ever conceived, and it garnered heaps of praise when it launched back in 2010. The third entry into the sci-fi series is getting people all hot and bothered already and, considering how much of an improvement ME2 made over the original, it’s not surprising that people are anticipating the return of Commander Shepard so wildly.

BioShock: Infinite

Bioshock came out of nowhere to become the poster boy for atmospheric story based gaming. With its unique setting and aesthetics, Bioshock was able to grab the hearts and minds of gamers in a way that the separately developed Bioshock 2 failed to do. Ken Levine and his Irrational Games are back at the helm for Bioshock Infinite though, so its huge change in theme and visual style is going to attract a lot of attention prior to its release next year.

Hitman: Absoution

Having taken a hit during the Eidos Interactive buy up by Square Enix, it’s been sometime since fans have had a taste of the refined stealth of the Hitman series. With a new gameplay focus and a plethora of new mechanics announced, Absolution is a sequel that fans have been waiting for for a long time now. Though it looks like it is seriously changing up the classic gameplay we know and love, there is no doubt that this one is going to turn heads when it launches in 2012.
