Destiny 2 Going Free to Play, Will Be Renamed “New Light” – Report

A Steam release is also planned, allowing players to migrate progress for free.

With the changes made to Eververse in the Season of Opulence and rumours of Bungie’s Destiny 2 coming to Google Stadia with cross-save functionality, many of us wondered what the future of the franchise held. Sure, details leaked about the new expansion Shadowkeep but what was next for Bungie, post-Activision? A free to play model, it seems.

An article on Engadget, which has seen been pulled but screencapped by Reddit user NintendoTim, indicates that Destiny 2 will be going free to play soon. It will be renamed Destiny 2: New Light and feature all of the content from Year 1. Future expansions like Shadowkeep will be sold separately. Cross-save is confirmed once again but for Xbox One and PC (no PS4 in sight).

The shift to free to play will also mean no more platform-exclusive weapons, armour or activities, which should be good news for those on Xbox One and PC. Interestingly, Destiny 2 will also be coming to Steam and allow players to migrate their progress and items purchased for free. Take this all with a grain of salt, but with Bungie’s livestream coming later today, it won’t be long before we find out the truth.
