The launch of Destiny 2’s next big expansion Shadowkeep and the free to play Destiny 2: New Light has been delayed. Bungie announced that both would be coming on October 1st as opposed to September 17th. In a recent news post, it stated, “As we get closer and closer to serving up Shadowkeep and New Light, it has become increasingly clear to us that our releases for this Fall would benefit from a bit more time in the oven.”

“Being independent means that the future of Destiny 2 is entirely on our team. It also means that we’re agile enough to choose to do what’s best for the game and our players, even if it’s the hard choice.” As such, the World First race for the new Garden of Salvation raid will take place on October 5th and will be active through the weekend.

Moments of Triumph is also being extended through to September 17th and there will be another Iron Banner event in the same week. The good news is that if you’re looking to utilize cross save, it will go live later this Summer. While Bungie is utilizing the additional time for polishing the expansion further, it wouldn’t have been a bad idea to delay Shadowkeep regardless.

After all, it would have had to compete for attention with Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Gears 5, Borderlands 3, and many other releases. A delay is a good idea, though it’s a bit surreal given that this is a first for the franchise (at least in terms of expansions). Of course, it also doesn’t hurt if Bungie doesn’t have to compete with these games when attracting new players to Destiny 2: New Light.
