Destiny 2 Strikes Will Tell Self-Contained, “Infinitely Replayable” Stories

Apparently these will provide "the best combat pieces" that you'll play "20, 30, 40 times over the span of years."

Bungie’s Destiny doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to story-telling, especially when it comes to Strikes. Sure, there are decent examples like The Sunless Cell or The Shield Brothers. But the majority of Strikes that launched with the game were pretty lackluster when it came to telling a compelling story.

That’s apparently going to change in Destiny 2. Bungie’s Justin Truman told GamesRadar that the Strikes in the sequel have self-contained story which boast interesting characters and villains.

“I think that when we build the strikes what we’re really trying to do is tell a self-contained story about an interesting character, usually an interesting villain, and build a really awesome combat experience that’s infinitely repayable,” said Truman.

“We focus more on spectacle and storytelling in the campaign, whereas in the Strike we focus on what is the best combat set-pieces that we can build that you’re going to want to play 20, 30, 40 times over the span of years. I feel like it’s allowed us to really double down on making sure that the strikes serve their purpose, the story serves its purpose, and exploration too.”

Interestingly enough, players had a chance to try out The Inverted Spire Strike in the beta and while many enjoyed the idea behind it, there were criticisms for the sheer amount of walking to be done from one fight to another, the bullet-sponge boss and the writing which ranged from good to “comedic yet cheesy.”

Bungie has been making changes since then especially when it comes to PvE damage caused with Supers and weapons but there are other Strikes in the game. We’ll have to wait and see how they fare in the story-telling department.

Destiny 2 is out on September 6th for Xbox One and PS4. The PC version arrives on October 24th but its beta will take place on August 29th to 31st.
