Account linking requirements were lifted due to technical issues upon the game's release, but Sony says they're soon going to be implemented again.

Helldivers 2 has brought more success for Sony and developer Arrowhead Game Studios than they could ever have imagined, and a large portion of that success has come through the co-op shooter’s sizeable audience on PC. Soon, however, Sony will be implementing a new requirement on that audience in order to be able to play the game.

When Helldivers 2 launched, Sony lifted requirements in its PC version for players’ Steam and PlayStation Network accounts to be linked due to technical issues. Soon, however, those requirements will be implemented again, the company has announced.

Starting May 6, new Helldivers 2 players on PC will have to link their Steam account with the PlayStation Network account to be able to log in to the game. Meanwhile, for existing players, the requirement will go into effect later in the month, on May 30. If you’re an existing player, you will have until June 4 to link your accounts.

“Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games,” Sony says. “This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”

It’s probably no coincidence that Sony is soon set to kick off proper PlayStation Network integration on PC with the upcoming launch of Ghost of Tsushima on the platform.

Interestingly, recent leaks have claimed that Sony is also in “very early preliminary discussions” about the prospect of releasing Helldivers 2 for Xbox Series X/S. Read more on that through here.
