Phil Spencer Doesn’t See Any Benefit in Helldivers 2 Not Being on Xbox

"When I look at a game like Helldivers 2, I’m not exactly sure who it helps in the industry by not being on Xbox," says the Xbox boss.

Microsoft has announced that it’s bringing four of its first-party titles to rival platforms, and though it hasn’t yet been confirmed what those four games are (besides the fact that Starfield or Indiana Jones are not among them– well, for now, at least), it does very much look like the company is testing the waters for future plans of expanding its multiplatform presence.

Speaking recently with Game File about the same, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer touched on the possibility of Sony and Nintendo games potentially coming to Xbox at some point in the future, saying that though he would like to see that happen, he doesn’t think it’s going to.

Interestingly, however, that led him to speaking about Sony’s recently released co-op shooter Helldivers 2, which launched simultaneously for PS5 and PC earlier in the month and has gone on to enjoy incredible success on both platforms– and Spencer says he doesn’t see any benefit at all in a game like it not also being available on Xbox.

“When I look at a game like Helldivers 2 – and it’s a great game, kudos to the team shipping on PC and PlayStation – I’m not exactly sure who it helps in the industry by not being on Xbox,” Spencer said. “If you try to twist yourself to say, like, somehow that benefited somebody somewhere.

“But I get it,” he added. “There’s a legacy in console gaming that we’re going to benefit by shipping games and not putting them on other places. We do the same thing.”

Interestingly, Sony itself has made multiplatform releases a significantly larger part of its strategy in recent years. Several major first-party PlayStation titles have released for PC, with more to come, and it’s looking like the company intends to accelerate those plans further.
