Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing conflicts in the region, nations and corporations across the world have retaliated by placing economic sanctions on Russia as the aggressor, and that’s very much been true of the gaming industry as well, with the likes of Microsoft and seemingly Nintendo having suspended Russian operations. PlayStation, too, has now joined in.
In a statement issued on Twitter, Sony confirmed that it is suspending all PlayStation operations in Russia. This will include software and hardware sales and operations of the PlayStation Store (and, of course, any related online services). As previously reported, Gran Turismo 7’s launch in the country has also been put on hold. Meanwhile, Sony Group Corporation is also making a $2 million donation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the international NGO Save the Children to “support the victims of this tragedy.”
Recently, EA also suspended all operations in Russia, after having removed the Russian national teams and clubs from its FIFA and NHL games. Ukraine-based developer GSC Game World also announced that the development of the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl had been put on hold due to the conflict, while Nintendo recently announced an indefinite delay for the upcoming Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp.
