Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Had A Tepid Steam Launch

The numbers don't look very encouraging.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is yet another addition to a long list of excellent games that have been let down by disappointing PC ports. Though Rockstar have been working to fix a number of major issues with the game’s PC version, the game still isn’t nearly in the state that it should have been, while its poor launch has left a bad taste in the mouths of everyone as well.

Apparently (and unsurprisingly), that seems to be having a detrimental impact on the game’s sales as well. Though Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out on PC for a month via the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store, Steam users had to wait a while, and the game only launched on Valve’s storefront yesterday. And apparently all the criticism and bad press surrounding the game’s PC port over the last month has convinced many Steam users not to purchase it.

Yesterday, which was the game’s launch day, Red Dead Redemption 2 managed a measly peak concurrent player count of roughly 12,000 players. Today has seen the numbers climb a little bit, with the figure sitting at over 27,000 at the time of writing. Both those numbers are a far cry from the constant and massive success Rockstar’s own GTA 5 has enjoyed on Steam for literally years now.

Of course, the fact that the game has been out on PC for over a month on other storefronts is a factor, and those who’ve already purchased the game obviously won’t be doing so again through Steam. That said, the numbers still present a disappointing picture. Here’s hoping Rockstar can fix the port to turn things around for themselves.
