Red Dead Redemption 2’s Companion App Functions Suggest A Forthcoming PC Version

Rockstar might be bringing their open world western to PC sooner than you'd think.

Rockstar launched a companion app for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the day that the game itself launched, just as they did with Grand Theft Auto 5, and while the app has some pretty nifty uses, some kind souls have also been able to dig into it to discover stuff that suggests that a PC version of Rockstar’s latest open world epic is not too far away.

A user over at the GTA Forums has found a bunch of very interesting strings and functions in the companion app. The bulk of these pertain to advanced graphical settings in the game’s PC version, for things such as shadow quality, lighting quality, particle effects, and reflections resolutions. PC users will be no strangers to having toggles for such graphical options.

Interestingly enough, TXAA is also mentioned in one of the strings- Rockstar made use of this in GTA 5’s PC version as well, and TXAA is something that’s exclusive to PC, so you wouldn’t find something like this in a game’s PS4 or Xbox One versions. There’s two more commands that are even more concrete evidence of a forthcoming PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. One of them is for the companion app auto connecting to the game’s PC versions, while the other pertains to commands- both very specifically mention PC in their strings.

It would make sense that Rockstar will have included stuff that makes that app compatible with PC as well, especially if a PC version of the game is around the corner. Of course, this isn’t official by any means, and we’re still waiting on an announcement by Rockstar, but it’s looking increasingly more likely each day that that’s an inevitability. Here’s hoping it happens soon.

If you’re not on PC, you can play Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 and Xbox One. And you really should- it’s flat out one of the greatest games ever made. If it’s sales in the UK so far and what analysts are predicting for its commercial performances are anything to go by, it’s going to get some much deserved success too.
