Red Dead Redemption 2’s Story Will See Van Der Linde’s Gang “Fall Apart”

If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Many are wondering how the story for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 will go and whether or not Rockstar will be able to recapture the magic of the first game’s narrative, which was part of what made it one of the most beloved games of all time. Now obviously, we’ll have to wait for the game to actually come out before we can pass any judgement on that either way, but we got some hints of where the story might go recently.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Rockstar San Diego art director Josh Bass said that the story of the game will see Dutch van der Linde’s gang, whom we know this game follows, “fall apart”, as things begin to go wrong for them, and their chosen life begins to take its toll on them.

“In Red Dead Redemption 2 you get to see that gang, including Marston, at the peak of their notoriety and at the very moment things begin to fall apart,” Bass said. “This story focuses on Arthur Morgan, Dutch’s most trusted enforcer. Adopted into the gang by Dutch when he was a young boy, Arthur considers the gang to be his family — Dutch has given his life some much‐needed purpose, and the gang has served as the one positive and constant in Arthur’s life.”

The thing with prequels is that you always know how the story is going to end, and you don’t get a lot of wiggle room to do something crazy, because doing that messes up causality- so players already know how Red Dead Redemption 2 will end (to some extent anyway), and that makes the story lose some of its potency. Whether or not Rockstar can surmount that obstacle to deliver something on par with the original game remains to be seen.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on Xbox One and PS4 on October 26.
