Star Wars Battlefront 2 Dev Responds (Again) to Unlocking Heroes, Credit Earning and More

Apparently, unlocking heroes like Darth Vader is meant to keep players playing "for a long time".

In the midst of overwhelming negativity with regards to Credit earnings and locking heroes like Darth Vader behind Credits in Star Wars Battlefront 2, DICE lead designer on Star Wars Battlefront Dennis Brännvall took to the sub-Reddit to address players.

He noted that going forward, performance would be the deciding factor for how many credits were earned at the end of a match and not time spent in the match. Player skill will be taken into account for matchmaking but game time and Star Card rarity is also factored. This means that you won’t be matched against players who are better or have higher tier Star Cards, which should alleviate some of the pay to win concerns.

As for unlocking heroes like Darth Vader, Brännvall said, “Heroes that are locked at launch will only be unlocked with credits, not crystals. The heroes, similar to the locked weapons for Troopers, are sidegrades instead of upgrades (Darth Vader should be on similar power level as Darth Maul, etc). The goal is to keep you playing for a long time and have something cool to look forward to as you earn credits.”

Which is funny because that does nothing to address the fact the (a) Credits can be earned from loot boxes and (b) You still need an obscene amount of Credits to unlock Darth Vader. Still, Brännvall said that the developer is constantly “evaluating and tweaking the earn rates versus the cost of crates and heroes.” The rates that are currently present are based on data from the open beta but they’ll apparently be changed at launch and afterwards.

“There will also be more milestones that award credits and crafting parts available, as well as star cards only unlockable through those milestones. If all you want to do is play and grind towards your next unlock that will be fully possible and we’ll continue to tweak the numbers until the requirements feel fun and achievable,” said Brännvall. He did point to the developer hearing player feedback from the closed alpha and making changes, following the same steps for the open beta and so on.

His final comment is pretty interesting as Brännvall said that, “Your continous feedback as you play the game is absolutely invaluable and I encourage you to keep sending it our way. There is really no reason to ‘rebel’ against us – we want this game to be as great and enjoyable as it can be – we’re reading all your feedback and working as fast as we can to adjust the game to your liking.”

“Rebel” huh? Anyway, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is out on November 17th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC so stay tuned for more updates.
