DICE’s games are usually known for supporting cutting edge technology, and Star Wars Battlefront was among the first AAA experiences to support the burgeoning VR format. It might come as a disappointment to many, then, to learn that the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront 2 will not support VR at all.
Criterion’s general manager Matt Webster said during an interview published by Metro GameCentral that while it had been planned once, it had been scrapped from the final game, after extensive discussions and deliberations.
“There is no VR,” he said bluntly. “At some point we could sit down and spend a good number of hours talking about where VR needs to get to in order to work with that, because in something like this you’re doing the job of a fighter pilot. And in the real world that has a significant physiological effect on you, which would dramatically limit the audience.
“But making the VR demo absolutely informed the work we’re doing now. So there’s a lot of the VR mission’s soul in Starfighter Assault.”
While VR will be a glaring omission compared to the first game, the game otherwise looks to be a significant step up over the original. Star Wars Battlefront 2 is due out on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 17 this year.
