Meme Rap (also referred to as Ironic Rap) is a sub-genre of Hip-Hop that blends both rap and meme culture together. It usually contains lo-fi production, copyrighted samples, lazy rhymes, crazy titles, and intentionally stereotypical lyrics. The main point of meme rap is to both impress you and make you laugh, throwing funny/off the wall bars at you from left and right.

The originator of Meme Rap is unknown, but many look to either Lil B or Ugly God as one of the fathers of the genre. Meme Rap would receive its first official “meme” hit back in late 2015 with Ugly God’s song “I Beat My Meat.”​

Through this sub-genre of Hip-Hop, many artists have been able to take their meme rap buzz to the next level, with rappers like Yung Gravy, Rich Brian, and Lil Nas X going from the SoundCloud charts to the Billboard charts. These artists have went from working with the most underground rappers in the game to some of the most respected people in the industry.
