  • On this World Environment Day, we reflect on the urgent need for land restoration and drought resilience in Africa. Recent statistics are alarming: Africa has faced 14 extreme droughts, more than any other continent. By 2030, approximately two-thirds of arable land could be lost to desertification, threatening food security and livelihoods for millions. The ongoing drought in East Africa has already impacted over 40 million people. With 2.8 million hectares of forests lost annually and 46% of land degraded, resulting in a $9.3 billion annual cost. The time for action is now! Let's commit to sustainable practices and support initiatives that aim to restore our land and build resilience against drought.

I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to attend the Global Sustainability Summit and Awards a few days ago at the prestigious House of Lords, London, United Kingdom. As a representative and coordinator of AYM4COP, an official partner of the summit alongside esteemed organizations like FAO, World Food Forum, Vertical Aspects, Lines and web and Vendoir, it was an honour to play a role in such a significant event. At the summit, convened by Otto Canon, C.E.O of Clean Cyclers, I had the privilege of leading communications and being part of a team dedicated to driving meaningful change in sustainability. It was truly inspiring to be amongst phenomenal individuals and champions of sustainability including Charlot Magayi, CEO of Mukuru Clean Stoves; His Excellency Hon. Peter Odey, Deputy Governor of Cross River State; Her Excellency H.E Ambassador Prof. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, First Lady of Kwara State; Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council; Nicole Hakim, Mariana Ruiz Worth of Spora Studio; Joanna Knight, Co-founder of a Sustainable Design Collective; Jonathan Wragg, Global Sustainability Director at Prominate Global; Ann Molin, CEO of Hack for Earth AB; Rhona Morrell, CEO of Reclaim Earth and iReGen Limited; Mustapha Njie, CEO of TAF Africa Global Ltd; Maudlyn Akosua Awuku, CEO GEWE Global Network; Netanela Duke, Co-founder of Obudu Conservation Center; Oshoma Zekeri, Co-founder and CEO of Vendoir, Nela Duke Ekpenyong, Co-founder of Akoda and Ucy Rochas, Director General of the Rochas Foundation amongst others. The summit served as a platform for dialogue among leading visionaries, experts, innovators, and change-makers, highlighting practical actions being taken to address sustainability challenges. It was encouraging to see a shared commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and a dedication to incorporating sustainability into our lifestyles beyond 2030. Throughout the event, diverse perspectives were explored, knowledge was shared, and collaborations were formed to shape actionable solutions. I am confident that the discussions and initiatives launched at the summit will pave the way for a more sustainable world that balances human prosperity with planetary health.

Empowering Youth Voices at COP28 AYM4COP Youth Delegation Makes Impact As a proud delegate of the AYM4COP Youth Delegation at COP28, I had the privilege of representing vibrant, passionate youths advocating for climate action. This incredible opportunity, made possible by the AYM4COP team's funding, allowed me to voice the challenges faced by my coastal community regarding marine degradation and species loss on a global platform. The funding provided by AYM4COP was instrumental in enabling youth delegates like myself to attend this crucial climate summit. It served as a gateway for showcasing our community's struggles and efforts in combating climate change's adverse effects on our coastal regions. With gratitude to AYM4COP's support, I shed light on the pressing issues of marine degradation, emphasizing the urgent need for action to safeguard our oceans. Funding for youth participation in such high-profile events is pivotal. It amplifies our voices, ensuring that the challenges faced by our communities are heard and addressed in global climate discussions. It empowers us to share our local initiatives, mobilize support, and collaborate with global stakeholders to drive impactful change. At COP28, I engaged with global leaders, sharing insights on the ground realities of coastal communities and advocating for sustainable solutions. AYM4COP's support facilitated a platform where youth-led initiatives and concerns were recognized, fostering a collective commitment to combat climate change's detrimental impact on marine ecosystems. As we continue our fight against climate change, it's imperative to recognize the significance of funding youth representation at international forums. These opportunities not only empower us to advocate for our communities but also pave the way for collaborative solutions in securing a sustainable future for our planet. #AYM4COP #YouthEmpowerment #ClimateAction #MarineConservation #COP28 #YouthRepresentation #GlobalClimateSummit #EnvironmentalAdvocacy #CommunityChallenges #SustainableFuture
