September is Democracy Month! As a Ghanaian, how satisfied are you with our democracy? In this latest blog post, John Osae-Kwapong (PhD.) takes us down memory lane, looking at historical data from Afrobarometer to gauge Ghanaians' satisfaction or otherwise with our democracy since 1999 (Round 1) through the years. Through the data, he speaks of a constantly changing narrative as regards Ghanaians' satisfaction with democracy over the years and how it is working. You cannot miss this thought-provoking piece in which he also talks about the implications for democratic consolidation as we commemorate International Democracy Month. The Center's 'I Am Aware' project, in collaboration with an NGO, Mother of all Nations Foundation, hosted a one-day community-based civic engagement training in Madina Municipality, Accra, targeted at young people on the theme, ‘Shaping our future, building our nation.’ The engagement was aimed at strengthening the civic consciousness of young people and emerging change-makers within communities, equipping them with the tools to address local governance issues and foster accountability and development. Communication Specialist (Assistant), Daniel Selormey, who represented the Center at the event, addressed participants on the usefulness of social media for advocacy, calling on young people to utilize social media to advocate for peace in the upcoming elections and pursue worthy courses in their communities. #CivicEngagement #IAmAware #DemocracyMonth

In 1999, Afrobarometer's first survey in Ghana painted a vivid picture of democratic ideals. Back then, democracy meant freedom - half of Ghanaians highlighted civil liberties and personal freedoms (29%) and government by the people (23%) as core values. Fast forward more than 20 years, 76% of Ghanaians describe their country as either a "full democracy" or one with "minor problems," and 51% express satisfaction with how their democracy functions.
