🦸🏿♂️ Proud to meet a hero here in Accra. My new buddy, Aviel Avraham, left Ethiopia at just 5 years old to chase his dreams in the Holy Land, and now he's holding it down as Israel's chargé d'affaires in Ghana. Today, he is Israel's acting ambassador here. 🇮🇱🇬🇭 To me, he's a straight-up hero, just like every Ethiopian Jew who made it happen. They're nearly 150,000 proud Israeli citizens making the Jewish nation thrive every single day. 🇮🇱🇪🇹 We’re both proud Israelis by choice, but here's a fun twist—we're also both obsessed with Portuguese. Yeah, we were chatting in Portuguese today, and it was epic. Let me break it down. 🇮🇱🇧🇷 Aviel did a three-year stint as Israel's deputy consul general in São Paulo, and his kids became fluent Portuguese speakers too. He's super proud of that, and keeping his Portuguese sharp is his jam. How could I not be impressed? Aviel, you're the man! From Decline to Growth: Revamping Ghana-Israel Trade Relations Trade relations between Ghana and Israel are a story of challenges and opportunities, and there's plenty of potential for growth. While trade volumes have seen a decline in recent years, the future is bright—especially in areas where both countries have unique strengths to offer. Current Trade Landscape Trade Volumes In 2022, Israel exported around $20.9 million worth of goods to Ghana, with the top exports being pesticides ($4.25 million), animal food ($3.84 million), and iron structures ($2.23 million). However, this represents a notable decrease from $54 million in 2017, marking a 17.3% annual decline over the past five years. On the flip side, Ghana’s exports to Israel totaled $1.29 million in 2022. Key exports included tropical fruits ($721,000), paintings ($143,000), and shaped wood ($95,000). This, too, shows a decrease from $4.65 million in 2017, with an annualized drop of 22.6%. Economic Complexity When it comes to economic complexity, Israel and Ghana are on different playing fields. In 2022, Israel ranked 20th globally with an Economic Complexity Index (ECI) of 1.23, showcasing a diverse and sophisticated export profile. Ghana, on the other hand, ranked 122nd with an ECI of -1.32. These differences in trade capabilities present both challenges and opportunities for enhancing bilateral trade. Opportunities for Growth Sectoral Collaboration There’s strong interest from Israeli companies to partner with Ghanaian businesses, particularly in agriculture, technology, and infrastructure. At the Israel-Ghana Business Forum held in 2023, representatives from Israeli firms, including those in agro-industry and cybersecurity, expressed eagerness to collaborate with Ghanaian entrepreneurs. The CEO of DekelOil Agri Vision PLC, for instance, highlighted the potential for agricultural processing expertise and logistics support. The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre has also identified valuable resources like lithium, manganese, and arable land. These could attract Israeli investment, especially in mining and agriculture, where Israel’s advanced technologies could make a big impact. Potential Exports and Market Access Ghana has untapped potential in exporting agricultural products and raw materials. By tapping into Israel’s advanced agricultural technologies, Ghana could boost the quality and competitiveness of its exports. Israeli firms, in turn, could leverage Ghana’s strategic location within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to access broader markets. The potential for revitalizing Ghana-Israel trade relations is immense. By focusing on collaborative projects in agriculture, technology, and resource management, both nations can build a mutually beneficial trade environment. Strengthening these ties could be the key to unlocking economic growth and enhancing trade dynamics between Ghana and Israel.

  • Transforming Ghana’s Aquaculture with Israeli Innovation Ghana’s aquaculture sector, contributing up to 5% of the nation's GDP, faces pressing challenges, including a declining fish supply and inadequate investment knowledge. At a recent forum, Aviel Avraham, Israel’s Deputy Chief of Mission to Ghana, emphasized the need for Ghana to leverage Israeli technologies to address these issues. By embracing innovative solutions from Israel, Ghana has the potential to significantly boost fish production, ensuring food security, creating jobs, and driving economic growth. Israel, renowned for turning arid deserts into fertile lands through advanced agricultural practices, has been a key partner in Ghana’s agricultural development. The collaboration between the two nations is marked by extensive knowledge transfer, capacity building, and the introduction of cutting-edge technologies. This partnership is further strengthened by training programs, workshops, and joint ventures, including an 11-month agricultural training program that sends Ghanaian students to Israel. The Ghana Israel Business Chamber plays a key role in this collaboration, frequently sending delegations to participate in key Israeli conferences for knowledge exchange. These include Agritech, a leading agriculture technology program, and WATEC, a prominent water sanitation conference. Through these opportunities, Ghanaian businesses and policymakers gain cherished insights and connections that are essential for the advancement of sectors like aquaculture, agriculture, and water management. The forum highlighted the ongoing efforts to introduce Israeli technologies that can enhance Ghana's aquaculture production.
