Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses
Non-profit Organizations
The GFSB is a non-profit organisation that exists to help small businesses in Gibraltar to start, grow and thrive.
About us
The Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses was formed in 1996 and is the leading non-political campaigning pressure group for the promotion and protection of Small & Medium sized Business in Gibraltar. The GFSB acts on behalf of the business sector by both lobbying and supporting Government as appropriate. We also offers advisory services to members and those wishing to start a business and also promote and support business led initiatives. Members of the Board attend Government meetings and sit on many relevant Boards to ensure the rights and benefits being discussed are fair and reasonable for Gibraltar small businesses. In addition to the commercial side, the Federation has been instigators of many social and economic functions that have considerably benefited members and non-members as well as the general public. The high profile that the Chairman and the Board have maintained has, at times, caused friction and problems with other smaller industry bodies but has shown that the Federation is a body that has the courage, conviction and following that is required to ensure level playing fields. The membership of the European Small Business Alliance has considerably assisted the promotion of Gibraltar and its problems within the European Union whilst at the same time opening doors for business connections and information on EU legislation.

Last week’s GFSB Wellness Series event on peri/menopause at work brought together Gibraltar’s business community to discuss support strategies for women experiencing this transition. UK data shows that 1 in 10 women leave work due to menopause symptoms, and while no local figures are available, the situation reflects similar challenges in Gibraltar. Why does this matter? With 3.5 million women over 50 in the UK workforce, addressing menopause in the workplace is crucial for retention and wellbeing (source: CIPD). These insights help Gibraltar’s businesses create more inclusive environments. Who were the experts? We especially thank the expert speakers for sharing their time and deep knowledge of peri/menopause with us. Dr. Reena Verdi: Managing peri/menopause Suzi Wine: Physical strength during peri/menopause MJ Feeke: Nutrition and lifestyle support Thanks too to Wellness Series sponsors, Infinity Group and Freska, for the lovely lunch. We are busy working on the next event in the series – keep your eyes on our socials and save the 21st November in your calendar.

GFSB Board Member Seth Galia, alongside Chairperson Owen Smith, represented the GFSB at this week's Gibraltar Day events in London. Seth reflected on the value of these gatherings, stating, “These events provide a fantastic opportunity to strengthen ties between Gibraltar and London." Gibraltar’s Minister for Business, Gemma Arias-Vasquez mentioned recent challenges, “From dealing with the challenges and, yes, consequences of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union to a global pandemic, Gibraltar has faced its fair share of challenges. And yet, these very challenges have served to reinforce what is unarguably our greatest strength – the depth and breadth of our relationship with the United Kingdom.” Seth and Owen also attended a Gibraltar Day event at India House, fostering connections between Gibraltar and India, opening doors for future collaboration. The event included trade panels and an address by Chief Minister Fabian Picardo. #Business #Gibraltar #Finance #London #Trade

With so much going on, one could have missed this week’s Retail Price Index figures. The Government of Gibraltar’s latest numbers show a 2.3% price increase from April to July 2024 and a 2.6% year-on-year rise, highlighting inflationary pressures. Notable rises in categories such as Transport, Alcohol, and Housing. GFSB members should be aware of potential cost pressures, particularly in the transport and goods sectors. What were the key takeouts? There were notable rises in categories such as Transport, Alcohol, and Housing. The numbers hint that Gibraltar’s economy may be shifting: Transport & Vehicles saw the most significant jump, rising 8.9% from 185.51 in April to 201.97 in July 2024. Housing increased by 1.3%, from 153.33 to 155.26. Alcoholic Drink & Tobacco also saw a notable rise, moving from 268.00 to 274.26. >>>> Go Deeper: https://buff.ly/404U0Mb

⚠️ Brexit Countdown... If you’ve been following the news, all signs point to EU/UK Treaty negotiations ending soon. Lines are drawn and tensions are high. - Gibraltar/UK and Spain reaffirm their positions and proposals. - Spain's Foreign Minister has confirmed the EU's new entry/exit system (EES) means the end of 'bridging measures' for Gibraltar residents - Changes could affect workers’ mobility and day-to-day operations for companies on both sides of the border. If showing a passport becomes necessary when entering Gibraltar, this means you MUST have a passport. We’ll keep sharing what we know, but in the meantime, we recommend checking whether employees actually have a passport, as many may be crossing the border using their national ID card only… Read more: https://buff.ly/4gXh8lD
