𝐍𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝟕𝟓 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝🥳⚡ This year it’s exactly 75 years since the first public power plant was inaugurated in Greenland, establishing the country's public energy supply in 1949 in Nuuk. Since then, much has happened, and today Nukissiorfiit supplies the entire country with energy, most of which comes from hydropower. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 The expansion of public energy supply in Greenland happened at a remarkable pace. Following the first public power plant in Nuuk in 1949, power plants were inaugurated the next two years in Qaqortoq, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Paamiut and Maniitsoq. From the beginning, there was a focus on security of supply, planning backup plants in towns. This became a reality in 1979, and five years later, all towns were equipped with emergency power plants for use in the event of outages at the main power plants. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐎𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 During the oil crisis of the 1970s, discussions began on establishing hydropower plants as an alternative to oil. Construction on Greenland’s first hydropower plant, Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat, which supplies Nuuk, began in 1990 and was completed three years later. Over the next 20 years, four additional hydropower plants were built, giving Nukissiorfiit five hydropower plants supplying six towns today: Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat (Nuuk), Tasiilaq, Qorlortorsuaq (Qaqortoq and Narsaq), Sisimiut, and Paakitsoq (Ilulissat). These hydropower plants have allowed Greenland to produce its own energy to supply power and heat, with hydropower proving to be the country's most important energy source. 𝐍𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Operating an energy supply where towns and settlements aren’t connected by a common grid has its challenges. Nonetheless, we at Nukissiorfiit take pride in being able to provide electricity, water, and heat to the citizens of Greenland daily. We follow in the footsteps of diligent and innovative employees and colleagues who have supplied Greenland with energy for 75 years. Looking ahead, Nukissiorfiit will continue working toward an efficient supply using renewable energy wherever possible. We do this by strengthening power grids, expanding electrification projects in hydropower towns, and establishing pilot projects using wind and solar energy. There is still a lot of untapped hydropower potential in Greenland, and Nukissiorfiit looks forward to constructing a new hydropower plant for Aasiaat and Qasigiannguit and expanding Utoqqarmiut Kangerluarsunnguat in collaboration with NunaGreen. The #anniversary was celebrated internally at all Nukissiorfiit facilities on Friday, October 25. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐮𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐢𝐭, 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝'𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 👷♂️ 🛠️ What is it like to do an internship in one of Greenland's largest companies, which is responsible for the entire energy supply in Greenland? Emil Helding Pedersen has the answer, as he has been an intern at Nukissiorfiit from July to October in Qaqortoq in the southern district of Kujalleq. He heard about the possibility of an internship from his teacher at SIMAC in Svendborg, and then the idea of trying to work in Greenland started to grow.    The 12-week internship in Qaqortoq has given Emil many great experiences, where he got a good feeling of what it means to work with the supply of electricity, water and heat, and also got a taste of what life is like in South Greenland. 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬  "It has especially been the wide range of tasks with variety within different areas, and the good community at the workplace, which has been fulfilling", says Emil. The many different tasks have also given Emil the opportunity to be outside in nature, and "to work outside in nature - that is something", he adds.  An internship is a really good way to test what opportunities await as a graduate, and Emil describes the 12 weeks at Nukissiorfiit as a good experience with a great community and an inclusive culture. Emil has done a bachelor's internship and is now back at school in Denmark to finish his bachelor. He will graduate in January 2025 and has chosen to apply for a position in Nukissiorfiit as district coordinator in Kujalleq. At Nukissiorfiit, we are happy to be able to offer an opportunity for an internship, which can help to inspire and create the framework for future job opportunities after the education.
