The General Assembly meeting 2024 of the HORIZON - Crete Aegean Hydrogen Valley - CRAVE H2 project took place in #Heraklion City, on the island of #Crete, from May 14-15, 2024. The project aims to create a Hydrogen Valley in Crete, promoting energy independence and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 💡 Eunice Energy Group, as the project leader, was pleased to organize this annual meeting and ensure every aspect of the project was meticulously managed and executed. We extend our gratitude to the Region of Crete for their warm hospitality during our meeting. This project represents a collective achievement, thanks to the invaluable contributions of all partners: Eunice Energy Group, REGION OF CRETE, Union Coach Services, ΔΕΔΔΗΕ Α.Ε. HEDNO S.A., Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), Ballard Power Systems, De Nora and Politecnico di Torino. Each partner brings unique expertise and experience, crucial for the project's implementation and success.🤝 Eunice’s Group Vice President, Dr.-Ing.George Pechlivanoglou, highlighted the challenges of hydrogen production on islands like Crete and conveyed his strong belief in the project's huge success. The Director General of Eunice’s Hydrogen Technologies and Project Coordinator, Dr. Spyridon Economou , underscored the significance of establishing the first #Hydrogen Valley in #Greece. Executive Regional Councilor of Crete, George Alexakis , highlighted the Region's actions towards clean energy transition and carbon emission reduction. He emphasized that the Hydrogen Valley represents an opportunity for Crete to achieve energy independence, move away from fossil fuels, and become a hub for exports. Ensuring that every citizen benefits from this energy transition is essential. 🔋 A significant highlight was the second day's visit by all partners to Atherinolakos, exploring the future site of the CRAVE H2 project. We extend our thanks to Union Coach Services for providing transportation to Atherinolakos. The site visit underscored Eunice’s and all parties' commitment to making the Hydrogen Valley a reality, paving the way for a sustainable energy future in Crete. 🚍 Stay tuned! 📢

As we embark on a journey to develop a hydrogen valley on the island of Crete, many questions arise. The hydrogen economy is not a fully-developed concept yet, both in the EU and beyond, so it is paramount to start with the basics. Why is hydrogen poised as the fuel that can help decarbonize transportation, as well as provide greater flexibility to the grid and, eventually, become a driver of the next stages of the energy transition? Hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth and several of its properties make it a highly suitable element to power numerous segments of the energy transition. ♨ Heating Value: The heating value of hydrogen beats that of gasoline by three times. Heating values largely determine the amount of fuel that must be consumed for a specific end-use need. A higher heating value is, hence, a major benefit of hydrogen and one of the reasons for its use. 🌲 Colorless, Odorless, Tasteless, Non-Toxic: In contrast to most fuels, hydrogen has a minimized impact on people and the environment, as the only by-product is water vapor. 🌤  Low Molecular Mass: Combined with its high energy density, it makes hydrogen a highly suitable option to store energy on the long-term and, in this way, help balance a renewables-dominated grid. As the project progresses, we will dive more in detail into how hydrogen will reshape the electricity grid, the transportation sector and other parts of the economy and the society, both within the CRAVE H2 context and beyond. Exciting developments in the hydrogen landscape! 💧 Eunice Energy Group, as the Coordinator for the Crete Aegean Hydrogen Valley - CRAVE H2 project, collaborates with esteemed partners, including the Region of Crete (GR), Union Coach Services (GR), ΔΕΔΔΗΕ Α.Ε. HEDNO S.A. (GR), De Nora (IT), Ballard Power Systems (DK), CERTH (GR), and Politecnico di Torino (IT). All project partners collectively spearhead the vision, goals, and challenges for the Crete-Aegean Hydrogen Valley. The project envisions a substantial financial investment 💰, covering every step in the hydrogen value chain. This includes securing dedicated renewable electricity supply from the GAP Interconnector (TYNDP2024 entsoe project with ref. no 1048), implementing high-pressure storage, distribution to a hydrogen refueling station ⛽, and collaborating with potential off-takers for the decarbonisation of the electricity grid and the transportation sector. The Cretan-Aegean hydrogen valley, already in initiation, garners full support from regional authorities committed to transitioning to a net zero carbon "hydrogen economy". The overarching goals are to design, permit, build, operate, and trade the elements of the hydrogen economy, marking the first use of hydrogen in Greece and, ultimately, contributing to the success of the green transition in Europe. CRAVE H2 valley wishes to all prosperous and creative 2024 to achieve our target of becoming 'climate neutral' and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible through the use of Hydrogen. The photo of the poppies is taken 4th January at 700m altitude above the sea level. These normally blossom around April & May. Staggeringly hot temperatures for mid-winter. This climate shift has to be retained and carbon free hydrogen is the only way to safeguard it. Please share!

Happy to present CRAVE H2 in the event co-organised by The Technical Chamber of Greece/P.T. of Eastern Crete and the Technical Chamber of Greece, on: "Hydrocarbons, green transition, hydrogen: Crete, energy hub" Χαρούμενοι που θα παρουσιαστεί το πρόγραμμα CRAVE H2 στην εκδήλωση του Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Ελλάδας/ Π. Τ. Ανατολικής Κρήτης και του Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Ελλάδας στο συνέδριο με θέμα: «Υδρογονάνθρακες, πράσινη μετάβαση, υδρογόνο: Κρήτη, ενεργειακός κόμβος» το οποίο πρόκειται να πραγματοποιηθεί 16 & 17 Δεκεμβρίου 2023 στο «Aquila Αtlantis Hotel» στο Ηράκλειο. Το συνέδριο τελεί υπό την αιγίδα: της Περιφέρειας Κρήτης, του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης και του Ινστιτούτου Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας.  Σκοπός του συνεδρίου είναι η ανταλλαγή απόψεων αναφορικά με την επικείμενη εξόρυξη των υδρογονανθράκων στην ευρύτερη θαλάσσια περιοχή της Κρήτης, η οποία αποτελεί μία δραστηριότητα που δημιουργεί έντονες αντιπαραθέσεις ως πολιτικό και κοινωνικό ζήτημα, καθώς αφενός μπορεί να συνιστά μία δυνητική πηγή εσόδων για ένα κράτος και τους πολίτες του και αφετέρου το περιβαλλοντικό αποτύπωμα που μπορεί να αφήνει, χρήζει προσεκτικής διερεύνησης.  Επιπρόσθετα, θα παρουσιαστούν οι εξελίξεις και τα έργα στην Κρήτη σχετικά με το υδρογόνο, στο πλαίσιο του Στρατηγικού Σχεδιασμού της Ε.Ε.. Το πρόγραμμα του Συνεδρίου περιλαμβάνει ομιλίες, παρουσιάσεις και τοποθετήσεις εκπροσώπων της επιστημονικής κοινότητας, της αγοράς υδρογονανθράκων, καθώς και θεσμικών και δημοσίων φορέων. Η γλώσσα του Συνεδρίου είναι η Ελληνική και η είσοδος είναι ελεύθερη για κάθε ενδιαφερόμενο. The Technical Chamber of Greece/P.T. of Eastern Crete is co-organizing, with the Technical Chamber of Greece, a conference on: "Hydrocarbons, green transition, hydrogen: Crete, energy hub" which is to be held on December 16 & 17, 2023 at "Aquila Atlantis Hotel" in Heraklion. The conference is under the auspices of: the Region of Crete, the Technical University of Crete and the Institute of Technology and Research. The purpose of the conference is the exchange of views regarding the imminent extraction of hydrocarbons in the wider marine area of Crete, which is an activity that creates intense confrontations as a political and social issue, as on the one hand it can constitute a potential source of revenue for a state and the its citizens and on the other hand the environmental footprint it may leave, needs careful investigation. In addition, the developments and projects in Crete related to hydrogen will be presented, in the context of the EU's Strategic Planning. The Conference program includes speeches, presentations and presentations by representatives of the scientific community, the hydrocarbon market, as well as institutional and public bodies. The language of the Conference is Greek and entry is free for anyone interested.
