Celebrating Greek Linguistic Triumphs in 2023: A Trifecta of Word-of-the-Year Honors! Greece, or at least the Greek language, triumphed in the 2023 word-of-the-year proclamations. Oxford's Choice, 'Rizz' (from charisma/χάρισμα): Gratitude to Oxford Languages | OUP for crowning 'rizz,' a word rooted in charisma, as the epitome of the year's linguistic essence. Oxford was gracious enough to crown ‘rizz’, from charisma/χάρισμα. Across the Atlantic, Merriam-Webster Inc. has our genuine gratitude for tapping ‘authentic’ (αυθεντικός) to reign over the lords of last year’s lexicon. And finally, back in England, University of Cambridge selected ‘hallucinate’ (from αλύειν, apparently) as best capturing the zeitgeist of 2023. Here's to even more linguistic glory in 2024! 🚀 #LanguageTriumphs #WordOfTheYear #GreekInfluence #2024LinguisticJourney #elitlanguageservices #translationservices #interpretationservices

The linguistic journey from farm (or forest) to fork Language can spice up our culinary world, distinguishing between the live animals we farm or hunt and the (hopefully) mouthwatering meals we serve. Let's delve into the culinary world to see how language becomes a seasoning that flavours our dining experiences. 1. Venison and Deer: "Venison" (from the Latin venari ‘to hunt’) is a formerly wild “deer” that has found its way onto a plate. This linguistic contrast celebrates the art of hunting in culinary terms. 2. Pork and Pig: The Norman Conquest of England gave us the distinction between "pork" (the meat) and "pig" (the live animal). This historical language divide marks the journey from farm to table. It's worth noting that this distinction was at one time indicative of class divide, with the aristocracy using the French-derived terms for meats (in this case, pork) and using the English terms for live animals. 3. Beef and Cattle: When you relish a juicy beef steak, "cattle" is the term for the live animals, while "beef" is what graces your plate. This straightforward distinction keeps menus globally accessible. This is another linguistic distinction with historical ties to social class, with the French-derived term (beef) being favoured by the upper classes. 4. Mutton and Sheep: ”Sheep” is the term for the live animal from which delectable “mutton” chops are sourced. Mutton is from the French “mouton”. 5. Poultry: Poultry, used for all our feathered friends raised for meat and eggs, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, has been spared, and reaches our table with names unchanged. These linguistic nuances, preserved across generations, shed light on diverse culinary traditions as we savour flavours from around the world. While some of these distinctions were once indicative of social class, today they serve as a delightful reminder of culinary history and tradition, accessible to all. Unlocking Language with ELIT Language Services: In this rich tapestry of language and culinary culture, one essential ingredient often goes unnoticed – the role of professional translators. ELIT Language Services and its team of skilled translators ensure that the nuances of culinary traditions are faithfully conveyed, regardless of the language spoken. #elitlanguageservices #translationservices #interpretationservices #language #culture
