It was an inspiring few days connecting with fellow educational leaders, sharing insights, and showcasing how intentional design can transform learning spaces. ❤️ I just flew out of Dubai with my heart and mind full, thanks to the amazing job Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools did with their Fall Leadership Conference. NESA has a great team and a very special leader, Maddy Hewitt. In fact, teams and leadership was what I presented on. Specifically, we explored what resilient leadership looks like during times of great change and adversity. It was a deeply moving experience, with educators from across the Near East, North Africa and South Asia, including those from regions directly impacted by conflict. Our session explored cutting-edge research on resilient teams in crisis and showcased real-world case studies from international schools. We delved into the evolution of organizational resilience, moving from a focus on recovering from isolated crises to maintaining functionality during ongoing adversity. Key takeaways included: 📌 The power of "flocking" - how teams come together to share and mobilize resources for positive adaptation. 📌 The importance of "relational pauses" - intentional breaks to address how work affects team members as human beings. 📌 Strategies for reconnecting after disengagement and dynamically reconstructing roles in response to challenges. Whether facing acute crises or chronic stressors, schools worldwide can benefit from these approaches to build more resilient teams. That's why I am excited to work alongside people like Bridget Davies and Laura Light for AAIE's Crisis Management Team, so we can support ALL schools, regardless if they are in crisis or not. ❤️ It was inspiring to see educators from diverse backgrounds, some from areas of conflict, come together to learn and support one another. Their dedication to creating safe, resilient learning environments for students, even in the face of significant challenges, was truly remarkable. Drawing towards the tail end of #NESA2024 and what a week it has been! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here, forging new relationships and meeting our valued clients. Special thanks to the inimitable Rick Detwiler for collaborating on our Risk Management Workshop today and humbled by the great turn out of attendees when I know ears and minds are full of information by this point. ✨ Attended another incredible NESA Fall Leadership Conference, FLC24, and this time in my new role as Associate Vice President for Accreditation for International Schools with MSA! What an incredible experience at the Fall Leadership Conference in Dubai. I had the opportunity to lead sessions on RAIL (Responsible AI in Learning), including a full-day design sprint and a deep dive into Year One Lessons Learned. It was inspiring to share insights and practical strategies with educators from around the world, all committed to shaping the future of learning and developing responsible global citizens. Connecting with leaders who are driving change in their schools was a highlight—so many innovative ideas and approaches! The conference wasn’t just about work; I also got to experience the vibrant city of Dubai. So, here I am at the Fall Leadership Conference, graciously (and beautifully) hosted by Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools. I'm finding myself eating my lunch, reading one of the resources that was brought up in Tom Schimmer's session on Effective Leadership Through Assessment: Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards Through Classroom Assessment. It's one of those "oldies but goodies" found in PDK International's magazine, Kappan, from 1996. As I sit here munching on my sandwich, and happily reading away about the powerful synergistic relationship between formative assessment, purposeful instruction and student learning I am both in awe of how far we've come and equally thoughtful about how the road might yet be. If you, like me, see the value of student-centered (even student-directed) learning then this is powerful stuff. Even if you've read it before, it's worth it. I hurry my last few bites.
