We say goodbye to summer with mixed feelings.
Sadness and anger for another year. Greece in flames for another summer. We saw untouched mountains and virgin forests burn for days. Within a few hours we saw the whole of North-East Attica in flames. We saw the fire not staying in the forest but reaching the suburbs of the capital, burning homes, destroying businesses and putting lives at serious risk.
This continues to happen and will continue to happen again and again until we learn and until we realise that large-scale measures must be taken to prevent fires and protect the environment and citizens.
Before being too late for everyone.
We have tried to help.
We were there, together with you. Friends, volunteers, partners and fellow citizens, alongside the firefighting forces.
We are grateful for everyone who put their lives on the line for the greater good, because this nightmare could not have ended without you.
At the same time and for the whole summer we were in the field taking care of the trees we planted in the previous tree planting seasons and making sure they survived.
We are proud to reach a survival rate of over 85% and watch our young trees grow and become a forest.
The tree planting season, which will begin in a short time, requires much more effort from us. Summer fires, continued global warming, drought, and the effects of the climate change we are experiencing daily leave us no choice.
Prevention and awareness through our educational programs. Fire prevention through forest clearance actions. Restoration of the ecosystem through tree planting and cleaning of beaches and seas. Nature conservation through tree care actions. Disaster relief through tree planting, reforestation, education and support for communities in disaster-affected areas.
With your support, we will succeed again this year. A challenging yet dynamic period is beginning.
Happy Autumn. 🍂
We will meet you in the schools, in the field and wherever nature and people are in need.
