On today's tip on how to become a better ally: Use person-first language Person-first language (or people-first language), is a practice that emphasizes the individual rather than defining them by their condition, disability, or characteristic. In person-first language, the person is mentioned before the condition or attribute placing emphasis on their humanity rather than reducing them to a single aspect of their identity. Let’s see some examples: 🔹Person with disability, rather than the disabled 🔹People who are blind or individuals with visual impairments, rather than the blind 🔹A child with autism, rather than an autistic child 🔹People with mental health conditions, rather than the mentally ill 🔹People with obesity or individuals with a higher body mass, rather than the obese 🔹A person undergoing cancer treatment, or a person living with cancer, rather than a cancer patient By using person-first language, we acknowledge the full humanity of individuals and foster a more respectful and inclusive community. On today's tip on how to become a better ally: Resist assuming what others need 🤝 An important part of being a better ally is understanding that everyone’s needs are different. What works for one person may not work for another. Instead of making assumptions, ask what kind of support they need For example, don’t assume that a mom who has recently returned to work doesn’t want new challenges. Before deciding not to assign her a new project, have a conversation and see what they prefer. The key to effective allyship is offering support based on needs, not assumptions. Listen. Ask. Support.
