How can you use performance management to promote a culture of psychological safety?
I have a strong belief that Patrick Lencioni’s triangle should be taught to every people manager on the first day they inherit a team or a direct report. It is so powerful to be given permission to bring your true self to work and feel that you belong. I also believe that clear objectives where you can feel you truly contribute to achieving them are the best motivator. The simpler the language and ask of the objective the easier the measurement of performance and also the feedback methodology! Lastly please let’s not wait till year end to share feedback. Often and specifics on practical examples is the best way to maintain that psychological safety and trust. And that is both ways. Give feedback and be ready to receive it!
