Minotaur - R

One of the core challenges in nuclear sector is the sorting of debris, called Magnox swarf, resulting from the decommissioning of fuel elements of Magnox type reactors. The sorting process seeks to retrieve highly radioactive parts from the debris that are contaminated by the nuclear fuel during their operational life. Currently, the Magnox swarf sorting procedure is mainly performed by manually-driven, remotely-operated manipulators. Our automated robotic solution is a package of off-the-shelf components and broader technology enablers redefined for the specific application area and exhibits high detection, picking and deposition performance indicators. Minotaur-R system’s basis is a 6-axis industrial robot – the sorting process and enablers are independent of robot type or make. Our system takes advantage of an optimized decision-making process based on readings from the integrated deep learning vision and radioactivity sensing system which together enable fast spring recovery. A customer gripper has been designed and ensures picking and deposition of springs with exceptional dexterity.
