Content Solutions Director - content strategy, content operations, content management.

1 analogy to give stakeholders their content strategy aha moment,  and the end of my The LavaCon Content Strategy Conference countdown. It seems to be difficult for some corporate stakeholders to understand why content practitioners need to have an efficient system for producing content, why creating content is more than filling in some form fields in a CMS. Sometimes the aha moment comes when stakeholders can relate the production of text-based content to the production of visual content. Photographers take pictures in RAW format. They edit their content in a fit-for-purpose environment such as PhotoShop. The final photos are then processed and turned into formats suitable for use in their respective environments. The photos are stored in a system meant for storing ready-to-use photos, where they stay until they're needed. Writers create topics in a structured format, in a fit-for-purpose authoring environment such as a CCMS, where they can edit and manipulate the content. The finalised content is then processed and turned into formats suitable for use in their respective environments. The content is stored in a system meant for storing ready-to-use content objects, where they stay until they're needed. Just as no one would ask a photographer to take their photos in a CMS or edit them in a CMS, no one should ask a writer to do so, either. In both cases, investing in a robust ecosystem suited to the types of content being produced makes for more efficient, scalable, and robust production processes. See you tomorrow at The LavaCon Content Strategy Conference #ContentOps #ContentOperations #LavaCon

Does your organisation agree on these terms? Rahel Anne Bailie sharing more gold ahead of The LavaCon Content Strategy Conference

Content Solutions Director - content strategy, content operations, content management.

4 misunderstood terms that make it hard to discuss content operations Each profession has its own vocabulary, often evolving in its silo. While this helps practitioners within each profession to communicate, it doesn't help cross-functional communication. Here are four terms that have created (sometimes hilarious) confusion. 𝟏. 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 After 20 minutes of heated discussion during a meeting I was chairing, I realised that the integrators, the content strategists, and the business analysts were all using the term differently. As a result, there was vehement disagreement about whatever issue was being discussed. We came to an agreement in the end, but it turned out to be a very expensive meeting to resolve one bit of (important) terminology. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐂𝐌𝐒 How often have people mixed up a CMS with a CCMS? The answer is about 99.9% of the time. The idea that a CMS (Content Management System) actually "manages" content is a misnomer. It's actually a delivery system for publication-ready content. Where the content gets managed at the authoring end. When the authoring system is a CCMS (Component Content Management System), that is where the complexity gets managed. 𝟑. 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 People talk about responsive design, and often that spills over into calling content "responsive content". The term "adaptive content" is used in the book "Intelligent Content: A Primer" to describe particular ways that content adapts to various conditions, including to responsive design. 𝟒. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 Yes, really. The "what is content" discussion never ends. Some people call content "data" (and data is called "raw data"), not realising that these are two very different types of entities. And now that Instagram and TikTok are churning out content creators by the thousands, the term is changing yet again. I've always defined content as "human-usable, contextualised data" - what do you think? Everyone loves to hate regulators - compliance is a bore. We're seeing more and more regulations coming into force (because we know that industry doesn't necessarily follow the rules when left to its own devices). The AI is the newest entity on the regulatory block. But what if we leveraged the need for compliance as a way to convince management to invest more in content? Tune in to hear about how regulations give us guerilla tactics to fight for the results that we might struggle with to get when posing the "right" arguments. #ContentStrategy #Regulatory #Compliance #AI

Content Solutions Director - content strategy, content operations, content management.

So many people I admire will be at The LavaCon Content Strategy Conference - here are 17 of them. Scott Abel - We've collaborated on workshops, books, and projects. We start talking about a tree and end up planting a forest. Can't wait! Noz Urbina - Our professional and personal lives have intertwined over the years, as we discover we're bookends in many ways. Right now, Noz is all AI and I'm all Content Ops, and we meet in the middle. Joe Gollner - Joe and I used to see each other many times a year on the conference circuit. Joe is a true philosopher, with his unique way of visualising frameworks and models, seemingly effortlessly. Joe, you talk, and I'll try to keep up. Sarah O'Keefe - My conversations with Sarah at tcworld have been interesting, and we have those hallway conversations (but over lunch) where our cynicism about the industry finds a sympathetic place to land. Plus she has good chocolate. Val Swisher - Val is a ray of sunshine, and very much the optimist. I hope to have a good chat about the changing model for global content and compare notes on the use of AI. Amber Swope - Ah, we have Things to Discuss. As we do a lot of DITA work, it's only fitting that I scheme and conspire (in a good way, of course) with the DITA queen. Carlos Evia - Though Carlos and I collaborated on the Content Operations from Start to Scale book, and even co-wrote the massive middle chapter together, we've never met in person. It's time! Lief Erickson - Our paths have crossed over the years, particular during the two years he did the Content Strategy Master's program. I'm keen to hear what he's been up to. Andrea L. Ames - We go back to STC days, when we both sat on the international STC board. I want to hear about the coaching chapter of her career. Kit Brown-Hoekstra - Another person I've known forever, and our last conversation at tcworld was very lively. Alan J. Porter - Over the years, Alan has shared his experiences and his wisdom freely with his fellow consultants. I always come away with nuggets that go into the mental repository. Patrick Bosek - One of the contributing authors to the Content Operations book, I always find conversations with Patrick illuminating. Jim Tivy - It's because of Jim that I learned to use DITA and want to thank him for his patience in personally teaching me. Rachel Houghton - I'm sure we'll have a chance to chat, mostly because she'll be putting her camera to good use. Jackie Damrau - It's been a long time since we've had a chat. Emails about submitting book reviews don't count, but we will talk about those too, I suspect. John Hedtke - No idea what I'll speak to John about yet, but he and I always have lively conversations. Heather Hedden - We've only met a couple of times, and I want to know more about her area of work. If you're not on the list and want to chat, drop your name into the comments and let's make it happen. #Lavacon24 #ContentOperations #ContentStrategy #TechComm

"AI is a tool, not a destination" Siobhàn O'Leary We partipated in an insightful event on AI literacy with tekom Ireland on Friday. A big thanks to our speaker Siobhàn O'Leary. AI is not going to 'take' our jobs, but it will change the tasks we do. We should think about how technology works as a partner in the tasks we do (AI augmentation). And at enterprise level, we need to be really careful in terms of ethics, and sustainability. The environmental impact is going to be significant if everyone jumps on the AI bandwagon, creates lots of additional data, and employees aren't given the proper training and support.
