In a historic election year, APCO’s 10th TradeMarks study dives into what trade associations need to thrive in Washington’s evolving landscape. The 10th edition surveyed more than 300 policy leaders and revealed the stable and evolving traits that define top trade associations. I thoroughly enjoyed leading a mental health awareness session ‘It’s not all in the mind’ at APCO Worldwide yesterday. In this collaborative session with APCO's Mental Health and Wellbeing Team in London, I shared new insights into overcoming stress, anxiety and exhaustion and building capacity - using a holistic approach of nervous system regulation. Participants learnt about the biology of stress and the mind-body connection for lasting and sustainable change - and how that's different from relying on techniques for long-term symptoms management. More specifically, the participants learnt about the importance of biological awareness skills and attunement to tap into their body's in-built capacity for self-regulation and healing. I highlighted the limitations of mind-based approaches, lifestyle and dietary changes in addressing the deeper issues that lead to chronic states of overwhelm, anxiety and fatigue - especially for high-achieving professionals.  On a practical level of stress resolution we discussed: 🌿 The importance of novel sensory input for calming the nervous system and discharging stress. 🌿 The challenges high-achievers face in shifting from 'doing' to 'noticing' and the importance of slowing down. ⛳️How slowing down actually accelerates results by triggering neuroplasticity for lasting change, energy and health. We had fun with a short simple eye-orienting practice to help participants explore switching their nervous system from an activated to a relaxed state - by reorienting their nervous systems to their surroundings. This session wasn’t about how to be more motivated or how to think more positively. In truth, most high-achieving professionals don't lack motivation as they are already highly driven (aka anxious) - they are *simply* depleted from habitually functioning in dysregulation and stuck in survival states.
