Swallowing difficulties, a condition known as dysphagia, is one common health issue faced by older adults. Not only can it take away the pleasure of eating, but also lead to malnutrition and increase the risk of choking. Recently we hosted soft meal making workshops at elderly centres for over 30 seniors and caregivers. Participants learned about the signs and symptoms associated with swallowing disorders, and that soft food can be a safer option if they encounter such conditions. With assistance from our volunteers, participants also gained hands-on experience in making delicious sweet and sour pork, in a texture-modified version that is easy to chew and swallow. Regular exercise is good for the body and mind, as it helps you live a happier, healthier life. It is also one of the key components of positive aging. At the fitness sessions we hosted for older adults in the community lately, our volunteers did some gentle stretching exercises with the participants, and motivated them to embrace an active lifestyle. The activities are part of our “Palliative Care for the Elderly” programme in collaboration with Fundación ”la Caixa” and The Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Territory. With the theme of “Golden Adventures”, it supports volunteer participation and the provision of holistic care for the elderly, whilst encouraging retirees and elders to proactively plan their personal finances, health, interests, and goals as they embark on their second half of life. #BEAFoundation #BEAVolunteers #PalliativeCareForTheElderly #GoldenAdventures #PositiveAging

Last month, over 40 colleagues from the Singapore Branch volunteered at a soup kitchen with Willing Hearts, a charity that prepares and distributes about 7,000 free meals to over 70 locations island-wide, 365 days a year. Our volunteers helped unpack food supplies, prepare ingredients for cooking, and pack food for distribution to the elderly, the disabled, low income families, and migrant workers in Singapore. Making a difference, one meal at a time! #BEASingapore #BEAVolunteers #Community #MakeADifference
