It’s not about financing the economy as it is but as we want it to be. #WomensForum2024 It was pleasure to participate to the Women's Forum for the Economy & Society at la Maison de la Chimie in Paris yesterday! Thank you Nicole Sautter, Julia Maris, Philippe Zaouati and Leila Toplic for this great discussion onstage about how to reconcile the way we do #business with the current environmental reality. From my perspective, finance must adopt a long-term approach over short-term profits. The future is obviously not fossil fuels or carbon-emitter businesses, even if they can generate profits right now. #Finance is all about preparing the future, supporting investments and businesses that will be the pillars of the global economy in the next few years. In the one hand, this requires divesting from “brown” businesses that cannot transition and invest massively in “green” ones, and, in the other hand, the role of financial institutions is to support all the sectors of the economy in their transition. That’s what we have been doing at BNP Paribas for many years: we are reducing our financing to fossil fuel, aiming a 90-10% ratio in our energy financing in favor of low-carbon energies by 2030 and we deploy a €200Bn envelope to support our clients in their #transition. BNP Paribas seeks to inspire other financial institutions to join in these efforts, as working in coalitions is the key to manage the ecological transition.
