<Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories: Betty Cheng - Innovating with an inquiry focus> Explore the Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories video series to learn how diverse Hong Kong school leaders and teachers approached innovation in education during the 3-year EIE project. Through 7 different stories, our local and international school educators share their valuable insights on how to experiment individually, collaborate with colleagues, and empower students to promote change in education. For Betty’s story, she shared how she established an inquiry focus to drive successful innovation with a clear goal and vision during her time at HKCCCU Logos Academy. During her EIE journey, aligning with the school’s emphasis on promoting self-directed learning, she identified her Inquiry Focus Question (IFQ) as “How to design lessons that enhance student autonomy and curiosity”. Sometimes, trying something new might feel overwhelming, with an uncertainty about where to begin. During the implementation of educational innovations, Betty found that having an inquiry focus helped her identify teaching strategies that addressed specific teaching needs. It is crucial to i) define and find consensus for inquiry focus; ii) pursue personal interests under a broader inquiry; iii) see Teachers as inquirers and reflective thinkers; and iv) use the inquiry focus to guide different teaching strategies. In this view, Betty advocated for educators to initially establish an inquiry focus, experiment with various approaches with an open mind, reflect with an open heart, listen to the perspectives of both teachers and students, and make adjustments step by step. Through this iterative process, many fundamental principles and strategies will gradually became clearer. Whether you’re a school leader, teacher, or education practitioner, we hope that these valuable insights and processes will inspire action in your own context! For Daniel and Gary’s story, they shared how they created a teacher-led professional learning community at HKCCCU Logos Academy to inspire and promote innovation. Starting by engaging a small group of colleagues to meet regularly as a study group, they nurtured a sustainable and autonomous environment for colleagues to learn and share teaching practices. This was a bottom-up and self-initiated learning approach that adapted to the unique contexts and shifting needs of individual teachers. They encouraged educators to embrace the process of continuously trying for improvement, and learn with and from colleagues to enhance teaching practices. <Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories: Lauren Minnie - Driving innovation through documentation & reflection> Explore the Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories video series to learn how diverse Hong Kong school leaders and teachers approached innovation in education during the 3-year EIE project. Through 7 different stories, our local and international school educators share their valuable insights on how to experiment individually, collaborate with colleagues, and empower students to promote change in education. For Lauren’s story, she shared how she used documentation and reflection to innovate in her classroom and as a department with her colleagues (formerly) at Marymount Secondary School. Documentation is a practice of observing, recording, interpreting, and sharing in different media the processes and results of learning to deepen and extend learning. This strategy supported her continuous reflection and adjustment in teaching practice to approach educational innovation. By effectively capturing learning moments involving both her students and herself, documentation made learning visible and empowered students and teachers. It also enabled the team to engage in evidence-based discussions, challenge assumptions and have profound conversations to advance teaching practices. Lauren advocates for allocating time and space for reflection through documentation among students and colleagues. Whether you’re a school leader, teacher, or education practitioner, we hope that these valuable insights and processes will inspire action in your own context! <Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories: Stanley Mak - Using reflective practice to innovate in education> Explore the Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories video series to learn how diverse Hong Kong school leaders and teachers approached innovation in education during the 3-year EIE project. Through 7 different stories, our local and international school educators share their valuable insights on how to experiment individually, collaborate with colleagues, and empower students to promote change in education. For Stanley’s story, he shared how he found opportunities for innovation through reflective practice at Marymount Secondary School. This involves asking 3 simple questions - “Who am I? Who are my students? What is my context?”. His innovative efforts fostered greater student ownership of learning and promoted visible thinking. By actively listening to and valuing students’ voices and choices, and applying Thinking Routines to support their learning, he created an environment that enhanced student engagement. Playful elements were also incorporated into his teaching strategies, such as tasking students to craft comics, create posters, produce short videos and design multi-choice questions. These strategies aimed to promote students’ autonomy and ownership in their learning, encourage curiosity, and foster joy and delight in the learning process. Whether you’re a school leader, teacher, or education practitioner, we hope that these valuable insights and processes will inspire action in your own context! <Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories: Fan Tsun Long - Innovating in the classroom> Explore the Envisioning Innovation in Education (EIE) Stories video series to learn how diverse Hong Kong school leaders and teachers approached innovation in education during the 3-year EIE project. Through 7 different stories, our local and international school educators share their valuable insights on how to experiment individually, collaborate with colleagues, and empower students to promote change in education. For Long’s story, he shared his attempts to apply the “See, Think, Wonder” Thinking Routine with his students at St. Francis of Assisi College. This is a three-step thinking prompt to support students to articulate their thoughts by carefully observing an object, expressing themselves with evidence, and posing additional related questions. This experimentation inspired him to be bold enough to start small for innovation, and reminded him of the importance of valuing student voice, which can enhance their learning motivation. Long also shared his further adjustments in the Thinking Routine to create relevance with the DSE curriculum, which reveals the flexibility of adapting Thinking Routines to support students’ learning.
