【CLP Power Strives for Accurate Load Forecasting amid Climate Challenges】 In recent years, extreme weather events have become more frequent and severe, posing additional challenges for operating the power system. CLP Power’s System Operation Department plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate power load forecasts by analysing weather data to predict power demand and coordinating with power plants to plan efficient and reliable daily power generation. Lok Chi-ming, Associate Director – Operational Planning and his team continuously monitor changes in power load, and use load estimation models and automatic generation control systems to adjust power output in real time, balancing power supply and demand. “Even minor weather changes can impact power load and extreme weather events pose additional challenges. While we use articial intelligence to process and analyse weather data, human expertise remains indispensable when it comes to unprecedented events like the torrential rainfall that occurred last year, as we lack historical data for reference.,” explains Lok. To enhance the accuracy of the load forecasts, Lok and his team also engage in regular exchanges with the Hong Kong Observatory and make reference to weather data from neighbouring Mainland cities such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou. #loadforecast #weatherdata #climatechange #accurateandreliable #CLPPowerSystemOperation

【CLP Power’s Live Line Work Team Safeguards Power Supply with Daily Maintenance Efforts】 CLP Power’s Live Line Work Team, the only one of its kind in Hong Kong, maintains and repairs 11kV high-voltage overhead lines without planned outages to ensure a reliable power supply. The team is regarded as a “Superb Power Team” which undergoes three years of local and overseas training to ensure they are well-prepared for the job. Stephen Yeung, Manager – Operations (Special Projects) leads a team of 20 live line workers to perform daily inspections and maintenance across Kowloon and the New Territories.  They are required to wear full protective gear, including helmets, insulated sleeves, gloves, flame-resistant clothing, and goggles. “Safety is always our first priority. Before we carry out maintenance, we conduct risk assessments and equipment checks, and discuss the workflow to minimise risks. A ground safety observer is always in place to monitor the procedures,” said Stephen. CLP Power introduced the 11kV Live Line Work techniques from Australia in 1998 to enable maintenance without planned supply interruption to minimise the impact on residents and enhance work efficiency. #11kVLivelinework #highvoltage #overheadlines #CLPPower #safeguardpowersupply

【Data Centre Decarbonization from Design to Operation Seminar】 CLP supported ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter and Nano & Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) to organise the Technical Seminar of Data Centre Decarbonization from Design to Operation, which was held successfully on 24 September 2024. Mr. Brian Sun of Digital Policy Office delivered an opening speech to about 220 participants. Speakers from CLP, NAMI, Huawei Hong Kong, Uptime Institute, Arup, etc. shared how to achieve the decarbonization in different building stages.   Data centre is one of the major electricity consumers, the operator of data centre inherently place great importance on energy efficiency. In the seminar, CLP collaborated with Equinix and PolyU, were invited to present the results of Air Flow Optimization Best Practice. 【CLP Power and Link won 2024 AEE Corporate Energy Management Award】   Our collaboration with Link Asset Management Limited for promoting decarbonization and electrification across LINK's 130+ portfolios in Hong Kong was recognized with the Corporate Energy Management Award - Asia Pacific Rim Region from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). With the support of CLP energy management solutions, Link implemented various energy-saving projects, including AI-powered energy management systems in 54 shopping malls, achieving over 31GWh electricity saving over the past 5 years. 【CLP donates new iPads to support the e-learning needs of students from low-income families】 E-learning is an emerging trend in education. This year, CLP allocated HK$5.7 million from its 2024 Community Energy Saving Fund to launch the E-Learning Assistance Programme for a third consecutive year. It provides new iPads for 2,000 primary, secondary, and tertiary students from low-income families to boost their learning efficiency as well as self-learning abilities. CLP Volunteers from its Digital Department organised an activity day on 14 September to help beneficiary students familiarise with the new iPads.  Participating students also visited CLP Pulse and used the new iPads to explore the museum and complete tasks based on themes of environmental protection, energy saving, and low-carbon living. #CLP #Elearning #CommunityEnergySavingFund #CaringfortheCommunity
