A resounding victory for the Gibson Dunn Washington, D.C. softball team, who made us proud by winning the law firm league softball championship! Never Dunn defeated Covington & Burling convincingly in the semifinals (29-4) and then went on to top Katten Muchin 15-10 in the championship game. Teams from Latham & Watkins, Williams & Connolly, McDermott Will & Emery, and the SEC took part in the league.   The team included associates, paralegals, a 2024 summer associate, a librarian, and a partner. Kudos to all our champions: John Chesley, Zane Clark, Nat Deacon, Robyn DeLeo, Brian Gorman, Laura Gaudio, Brett Kohler, Jessica Matsuda, Cameron Pritchett, Matthew Sappington, Jack Strachan, Sam Whipple, Josh Zuckerman.

“An experience of a lifetime” is how Los Angeles partner Theane Evangelis describes her first-ever argument before the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year, in a case that was watched and widely reported across the country. The Court ultimately agreed with Theane that cities have the authority to enforce public-camping regulations and that laws banning public encampments do not violate the Eighth Amendment. Theane summarizes many aspects of the case in her interview with the Daily Journal, noting that every justice asked questions, that the justices were clearly concerned with the “practical implications” of the case, and that the Court’s ruling resulted in immediate action by state and local governments to address encampments. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Supreme Court decision that’s had such an immediate, practical impact.” The Daily Journal recently recognized Theane as one of California’s Top 100 Lawyers.

Los Angeles partner Chris Dusseault, named one of California’s Top 100 Lawyers by the Daily Journal, spoke with the publication about some of his notable recent cases, including two in which he represents the Berkshire Hathaway affiliate HomeServices of America in connection with allegations of a conspiracy to inflate real estate commissions: “high-stakes” cases that are “causing significant changes in the real estate industry,” an industry that “touches the lives of many Americans and involves what is often their single most valuable asset” — their home. Being brought in on appeal, as he was in the first of the two cases for HomeServices and has been in numerous other cases, is both a challenge and an opportunity “as we are often able to identify and articulate in a simple way why the outcome was wrong and why it must be reversed.”

In this sixth episode of our podcast “A View from the Bench,” Washington, D.C. partner George Jarrod Hazel and Houston partner Gregg Costa draw on their experience as both trial lawyers and judges to share their perspectives on what can help to win — or lose — a case at trial. In a lively exchange that includes substantial agreement as well as some notable differences of opinion, they consider the relative importance of opening and closing arguments, expert testimony, jury selection, cross-examination, the presentation of a defense, the use of visuals, and — in what has become an increasingly rare event — the testimony of the defendant. Their discussion is interspersed with numerous examples from cases they tried or presided over.  “A View from the Bench” features George Hazel and Gregg Costa discussing their careers as judges, their return to private practice, and the current state and future of trials. https://lnkd.in/gfcpVBj7
