Stephen Ho, founder & CEO of our portfolio company n-hop technologies Limited shared their insights on network coding.

Lately, there's been a buzz about network coding. My colleague recently penned some insights on network coding. 150 years ago, Victor Hugo said that nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come. Sometimes in technology there are great ideas that do not gain traction for years: often because they need other technological developments to make them either feasible or more economic. These under-used ideas are sometimes described as “Sleeping Beauties” - waiting for their prince to come.   One such idea is Network Coding, first proposed in the late 1990s in research led by Professor Raymond Yeung at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Put simply, Network Coding is an improved method of passing data through telecommunications networks, especially when the network contains a number of poor-quality links. The research showed that Network Coding offered significant improvements in data throughput when compared to conventional transmission methods such as TCP/IP.   Since 2003 Network Coding has been used in some specialised applications, but despite its promise it has not been more generally adopted. The main reason for this is that Network Coding depends for its success upon recoding and decoding of data signals at intermediate and receiving points inside the network. The process of recoding and decoding requires sufficient computing power to be distributed throughout the network, but until quite recently most networks have not contained distributed devices with sufficient computing capacity to make this possible. In fact the dominant networking trend since 2003 has been the introduction of cloud computing, which focusses upon centralised rather than distributed computing.   Two developments have changed the paradigm. The first is the more recent growth of edge computing, under which computing power is distributed away from the network centre in order to process information nearer to its source. Edge computing improves latency and optimises network bandwidth, but it also offers the distributed processing power that Network Coding requires to operate efficiently.   The second development was further research at The Chinese University of Hong Kong which led to the development of BATS, an acronym for Batched Sparse Coding. BATS Coding is a method of speeding up the encoding, recoding and decoding process in Network Coding, while simultaneously reducing the computer resources needed in that process. The BATS concept is protected by international patents and is being commercialised by n-hop technologies Ltd., a Hong Kong based start-up venture.   As well as his role at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Yeung is also one of the founding directors of n-hop technologies Ltd. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month, Professor Yeung said “The combination of edge computing and BATS Coding provides an ideal platform for Network Coding to reach its full potential. It is time for this “Sleeping Beauty” to wake up!”.
