Following the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) approval of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs on April 24, 2024, Hong Kong is set to begin trading the first batch of spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on April 30. This inaugural group includes ETFs based on Bitcoin and Ether by China Asset Management Co., Ltd. Distinctly, Hong Kong is adopting an in-kind creation process for these ETFs, contrasting with the cash-only transactions seen in the US. In the US model, investors contribute cash to receive shares in the ETF; conversely, Hong Kong’s approach allows for direct Bitcoin contributions in exchange for ETF shares. This method could significantly influence market dynamics by aligning ETF trading closer to the underlying cryptocurrency assets, potentially enhancing liquidity and price stability.
