3 surprising facts about air pollution according to WHO data, on this #InternationalCleanAirDay. Did you know? ☁ More than 9 out of 10 of the world's population lives in places where air pollution exceeds safe air quality limits. ☁ Air pollution is the fourth largest threat to human health, responsible for 15% of all global deaths from air pollution-related diseases. ☁ Almost all deaths (94%) linked to air pollution occur in low- and middle- income countries. Parts of Africa, Eastern Europe, India, China, and the Middle East are the biggest danger spots. The clear solution is to reduce emissions of pollutants in the first place, but trees can be of great help acting as the "lungs" of an ecosystem. 🌿Tiny pores on the leaves of trees, called stomata, inhale air that contains toxic gaseous air pollutants. Once absorbed, gases, including pollutants such as SO2, NO2, CO, and ozone, diffuse within the inner surfaces of the leaves, are broken down, and oxygen is emitted. 🌿Trees also act like the "liver" of an ecosystem, removing harmful particulate matter from the air by temporarily "catching" it on their vegetative surfaces. When it rains, these particulates wash off of the tree and are carried into the soil or dissolve into stormwater. 🌲Not all tree species are created equal. Conifers like pines and cypresses are among the best pollution filters, their success partially due to their canopy structure - the dense canopy of needle-like leaves is very effective at trapping pollutants. And because they don't drop their leaves in winter like deciduous trees, evergreen species act as year-round filters. Happy World Plant Milk Day! Do you factor sustainability into the milk you use, or the milk(s) provided at your office coffee station or cafe/restaurant? Do you have a favorite? It's no surprise that cow's milk is far less sustainable than all the plant milks available, but which plant milk is the most sustainable? There is some variation in the data available when additional factors are applied like land use and deforestation, GMOs, pesticides, packaging, and transporation to the consumer; but we started with water use and emissions in production. 5 facts about orangutans on International Orangutan Day 1. The name 'orangutan' translates from the Malay language to 'man of the forest'. 2. Orangutan young stay with their mothers for up to eight years - longer than any other great ape. 3. Orangutans are the world's largest tree-dwelling mammal, spending nearly their entire lives living and sleeping in trees. They cannot survive without trees. 4. A century ago, more than 230,000 orangutans lived in forests all across south-east Asia. Today they're only found on two islands: Sumatra and Borneo. There are fewer than 120,000 orangutans left in the wild. 5. The single biggest threat to orangutans is rapid deforestation, mainly due to palm oil and other agricultural plantations. We support reforestation projects that include habitat corridor restoration for the many species that rely on intact forests for their survival.
