For Bloomberg's CityLab series “Look at That Building" about everyday — and not-so-everyday — architecture, Mark Byrnes looks to Chicago's 'The Mart.' Once the world’s largest office building, this Art Deco behemoth has been reborn after two $40 million renovations. "Since 2018, a program called ART on THE MART has projected contemporary art from local and international artists onto the building’s southern facade at night, attracting visitors from the Loop side of the river. "Fondation Beyeler’s latest show is conceptual, delightful and never stops changing." For the first time in the Fondation Beyeler’s more than 25-year history, the entire museum and its surrounding park has been transformed into the site of an experimental presentation of contemporary art. Inside, artworks are rehung throughout the day as part of Tino Sehgal’s performance at the institution in Basel. Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, a powerhouse in the global art scene, has collaborated with countless artists throughout her impressive three-decade career in philanthropy. She asked to be in conversation with Polish artist Paulina Olowska, whose multifarious practice – encompassing painting, photography, video, and performance – was the object of a major solo show at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin earlier this year. Together, Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Olowska will discuss the outcomes and insights gained from their collaboration, examining their experiences through the prism of their respective philanthropic and artistic practices – among the most forward-thinking in Europe today.

SPRING ARTS picks up a post Venice Biennale pace, as this week Frieze New York kicks off. New arts destinations, major donations and perfect weekends: Nicolai Tangen’s Kunstsilo opens next week – a pre-war grain store is now an ambitious art museum in Norway, as reported in this weekend’s Financial Times HTSI, by Christian House.    In Detroit, Library Street Collective co-founders Antony and JJ Curis open a new cultural arts center, ‘Little Village’ which includes: a former church surrounded by a skate park designed by Tony Hawk and McArthur Binion; a sculpture garden honouring the late Charles McGee, an art-filled B&B, a former bakery redeveloped into an arts hub by OMA and a contemporary art gallery. Included in the The New York Times Museums special.    In Financial Times Life & Arts, Peter Aspden speaks to Dimitris Daskalopoulos on 2 years since he donated more than 350 works to Tate, National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.   FIFA Museum’s Director Marco Fazzone describes the perfect weekend in Zürich for FT Globetrotter, including Landesmuseum Zürich, the Opernhaus Zürich and Kunsthaus Zürich.

For the The New York Times Museums special section, Library Street Collective co-founders Anthony and JJ Curis discussed their plans for 'Little Village' in Detroit. The new cultural arts center, The Shepherd, which opens to the public on May 18, sits at the heart of this community centered around the arts. The former church, which Peterson Rich Office has transformed, is surrounded by a public skate park designed by Tony Hawk and McArthur Binion, a sculpture garden honoring the late artist Charles McGee, an art-filled Bed & Breakfast doubling as headquarters for McArthur Binion's Foundation, and more, all on 3.5 acres of publicly accessible green space designed by OSD.   In the wider neighborhood, a former bakery has been redeveloped into a mixed-use arts hub by OMA. The 'LANTERN' will house two non-profits, affordable studio spaces for artists, and commercial spaces for more local businesses. Louis Buhl & Co., a contemporary art gallery and project space started by the Curises, will be moving to a former convent building directly adjacent to the Shepherd.    The Curises, alongside neighbors and community stakeholders, are putting down roots in this Detroit neighborhood. Read more from Hilarie Sheets: https://lnkd.in/dmPWPxmN

"Tangen has helped turn a prewar grain store on the isle of Odderøya — a military fortress turned park — into one of the most ambitious art museums in Scandinavia and filled it with the world’s largest private collection of Nordic modern art."   Nicolai Tangen, formerly of the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund, contributed 5,500 works from his personal collection to the eight-year project.   Kunstsilo will open in Kristiansand, Norway on 11 May.   Christian House reports for Financial Times HTSI.
