Ethics, applied.

About us

We are a team of business professionals, character educators and academics working on developing resources, products and services to support the development of ethics in enterprises and communities. We take our name from the Japanese woodworking technique known as 'kigumi,' in which joints are held are held together by complementary forces, without the use of nails or adhesives. We believe that the character of a business or a person should be like kigumi: a balanced, interwoven set of forces that stand upright on their own merit, without any external pressures.

Kigumi Group was thrilled to deliver a workshop on "Digital Well-Being" to all Year 8 students at Yew Chung International School (YCIS) Hong Kong this week. The customised workshop covered key pain points gleaned from discussions with YCIS HK's teachers on what their students needed the most support in when it comes to digital well-being and literacy, including: - How to take a preventative approach to cyber risks and minimise risks through good data privacy practices - How to recognise symptoms of brain fatigue and unhealthy boundaries with your tech devices - How to fight back against attention-based design and data brokers Thanks to Ms. Ashleigh Jurrius, Mr. Craig Billington and Ms. Amata Ho for their support in bringing Kigumi into YCIS HK for this great opportunity to work with their Year 8's.

Excited to announce that we’ve released our latest suite of tech ethics trainings after a busy summer of research and curricular design: 1. What is Cyber Reasoning? 2. What Is Misinformation? 3. How Does Social Media Affect My Brain? 4. How Do Emotions Snowball? 5. What is Generative AI? 6. What Is AI Bias? 7. What Is the Carbon Footprint of Computing? 8. What Are Neural Implants?  9. What Is Data? You can see excerpts from 2 of the trainings below. We're especially excited that our “What Are Neural Implants” and “How Do Emotions Snowball” cover new research and territory in tech ethics - like the right to cognitive privacy and emotional contagion theory - and work to introduce this research at a late-primary and early-middle school level so that digital natives gain early awareness of emerging ethical topics as users and creators of tech. An enormous thanks to the interns and consultants on board this summer - Canon Pham, Neha P., Keerthi Marri, Nujhat Alam Mredula and TRISH NGUYEN who contributed invaluable hours and knowledge from their data science, neuroscience, legal and robotics backgrounds to support Gen Z kids navigate these new topics enjoyably and effectively. #kigumigroup #aiethics #digitalliteracy #cyberresilience

⚒ 🤝 Project-Based Learning & Community Service Summer Opportunity This summer we’re launching a virtual Cyber Ethics Hackathon for students who want to tackle a real-life social problem related to AI, tech or living in a digital world. Students will: 🧠 DEFINE a real-life problem affecting their friend group or community,  💻 RESEARCH relevant solutions and  📽 CREATE a short educational training video to inform other students just like them about the solution. Participants will be students from international and local schools across Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere across Asia. The Hackathon Kit is virtual and self-paced. We ask one teacher or parent to be kept in the loop, but the activities are entirely students-led to develop critical thinking and collaboration skills. Feel free to pass the info along to any interested parties as this is a grassroots event for any and all students across Asia who are passionate about community service and making a difference to the mental health and well-being of their communities. Students can register with their teacher / parent facilitator at https://bit.ly/3wXL6nm. #kigumigroup #aiethics #digitalliteracy #girlswhocode #steameducation #projectbaselearning #communityservice #socialemotionalintelligence

As companies and consumers gain more understanding of how important AI ethics are to ESG and sustainability, we’re betting that AI audits/assessments will come to be a legal requirement (or highly incentivised behavior) in the near future for jurisdictions across Asia. Pleased to share that Kigumi Group is now equipped to enter this conversation at a corporate level by gaining our certification to perform ethical assessments of any autonomous AI system from the international standard setting body for engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This globally recognised AI ethics certification (IEEE CertifAIEd TM) can be applied to any individual AI systems that a company or organisation is currently developing. It also can be used to assess an AI system that is already deployed (internally and externally) to set offerings apart from competitors, increase stakeholder buy-in, and cross-check organisational cybersecurity and data privacy practices for compliance purposes. As consumers continue to favour companies that are forward-thinking and ESG-centric, this credential offers an additional edge to a company’s ESG toolkit and sets a standard for ESG practice in the region. Thanks to Women of Hong Kong for hosting us at their lovely space last night for our panel on all things parenting and tech, which also happened to fall on International Girls in ICT Day this year. 👩💻 👩🔬 👩🏭 👩🚀 Deft-moderation by Janet Paskin, who brought her editorial and journalistic skills to steer what is an exceptionally broad topic area, ranging from social media, to neuroscience, to attention-based design, and of course, good old parenting and the importance of focusing on the fundamentals of human communication. Mostly it was simply pure FUN to sit alongside vibrant women Shalini Melwani and Arcadia Kim, who offer a mix of professional knowledge with personal parenting acumen and a healthy sense of humour that I’ll be continuing to play catch up to. From initial feedback it seems like similar panels and workshops are in our (tripartite) future for Hong Kong schools and PTA groups. Stay tuned 🎤

Pleased to share that Kigumi Group will be speaking on an in-person panel, "Values-Led Parenting in a Tech and AI Age" next month on 25 April 2024 in Hong Kong along with seasoned parenting + tech coaches Arcadia Kim and Shalini Melwani. If you’re in Hong Kong and are a parent or educator keen to learn about the importance of ethical competencies and skills for the future, and want to understand how to cultivate a values-driven mindset within their families in the context of emerging technology, we’d love to see you! We’ll discuss strategies for fostering critical thinking and emotional resilience for Gens Z and A; healthy relationships with technology that we can model for our kids; how to encourage children to think independently about their technology use rather than simply following trends; and how to ensure that children understand the implications of their actions online, both socially and ethically.
