Global Chief Executive Officer, Urban Land Institute

Today, I begin my journey as Global CEO of the Urban Land Institute, the world's oldest and largest network of multidisciplinary real estate professionals. With a membership base of over 48,000 experts worldwide, ULI is uniquely positioned to address the complex land use challenges that are critical to ensuring communities thrive for generations to come.    In just over 25 years, the world’s population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion. Most of this growth will occur in our cities, with almost seven out of 10 people projected to live in urban spaces by 2050. This shift will place significant pressure on both established and emerging metropolitan areas, presenting global and local challenges that will require innovative, multi-faceted solutions.    Organizations like ULI play a critical role in addressing these challenges by bringing together our members, partners, and other stakeholders from around the world. By leveraging our collective expertise, we can devise cross-disciplinary solutions that not only address global trends but also have a tangible impact on local communities.    I am eager to amplify ULI’s mission-driven work and further harness the wealth of ideas and expertise within our membership. In the coming months, my top priority will be to serve as the organization's Chief Listening Officer, engaging with our staff, members, our vast network of districts and national councils, and partnering organizations to understand our current goals and to collectively shape our vision for the future.    I am deeply grateful to the ULI board and search committee for their trust and support in welcoming me into this extraordinary organization. I look forward to working alongside our members to advance our mission to shape the future of the built environment.

🌊 A timely and crucial report for real estate leaders worldwide: "Surge: Coastal Resilience and Real Estate" Do you know that approximately 40% of the world’s population lives within 62 miles (100 km) of a coast? Many of our major cities and vibrant urban areas are located along these shorelines. However, coastal hazards exacerbated by climate change are increasingly affecting these communities and their populations. This report is a vital resource for both private- and public-sector professionals, as well as communities. It offers best practices, insightful case studies, and innovative strategies to help us integrate coastal resilience into land use and real estate practices, allowing coastal regions not just to avert and recover from climate-related disasters, but also to thrive. “A lot of traditional approaches have been on the defensive side, and it’s been hard engineering—gray infrastructure, bulkheads, riprap—that you see in every city in terms of the way in which we’ve traditionally defended against the ocean. Nowadays, we do a lot more on the green side in terms of how we incorporate ecology and more natural solutions into that coastline to be able to defend over time.” — Scott Dunn, Chief Strategy Officer, Asia, AECOM The Asian Development Bank (ADB) estimated a need for approximately US$1.7 trillion per year in infrastructure investment between 2016 and 2030 to meet its development goals. Of that amount, US$200 billion is specifically allocated for addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation costs.
