So you were granted Croatian citizenship, now what? First of all, congratulations! 🇭🇷 Citizenship comes with many benefits, but before you get to fully enjoy your new rights, there is some admin to take care of! Just because you have citizenship now, we don’t want to mislead you into thinking everything will be easy now (that’s Croatia for you!😅). These are the next steps you need to do after getting Croatian citizenship. 1. Take a solemn oath 2. Get a Decision on citizenship 3. Register in the Book of Citizens 4. Get the domovnica 5. Register in the Book of Births 6. Register a foreign marriage or divorce 7. Get your Croatian birth certificate 8. Get a passport 9. Get an ID card 10. Every year on August 5, Croatia celebrates the national holiday called Dan pobjede i domovinske zahvalnosti i Dan hrvatskih branitelja (Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders). On this day, Croatia commemorates the military action called Oluja (Operation Storm) from the Domovinski rat (Croatian War of Independence), which was the last major battle of the war in 1995. The Croatian army liberated the city of Knin, occupied by the Serbian army, resulting in the end of the Republic of Serbian Krajina proto-state. The main celebration of this holiday is held in the city of Knin, where Croatian politicians and residents come together to honour the Croatian defenders who died in the war. The holiday is also celebrated in other Croatian cities such as Vukovar, Osijek, Petrinja, Rijeka, and Pula. These celebrations are also marked by lighting candles, laying wreaths, and organizing parades, concerts, and fireworks. Note: As this is a national holiday and non-working day, most shops and restaurants are closed and transportation services are limited.
