Very proud to announce that our Horizon Europe project called TWINSAFE, for which our Anita TREGNER and Petar Gregurić coordinated the proposal preparation process, has been awarded an exceptional score of 14.5 out of a possible 15 points, securing a grant of 1.5 million EUR. With a total number of 848 projects proposals competing from the whole Europe, the success rate was below 10%. The overarching vision is to establish FTTS as a centre of excellence in multidisciplinary road safety research, education, and innovation. Through its multidimensional approach, TWINSAFE will cultivate an ecosystem uniting academia, industry, and government to pioneer data-driven solutions for a key societal challenge — improving road safety. Congrats to Dario Babić, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, Tom Brijs (Hasselt University), and Carmelo D'Agostino (Lund University) and good luck in your Twinning exercise! P.S. 🚀 Excited to announce that the European Innovation Council (EIC) will be investing €1.4 billion in breakthrough innovation across Europe in 2025 after the Commission adopted the new Work Programme today. This funding, part of Horizon Europe, targets deep tech and strategic technologies essential for Europe’s competitiveness. Key features include: ☑️ STEP Scale-up Scheme: €300 million in total for equity investment in companies driving strategic technologies, to help them secure larger private co-investment. ☑️ EIC Pathfinder: €262 million in total for early-stage, multi-disciplinary research that could lead to technology breakthroughs. €120 million of this in “EIC Challenges” funding for emerging tech (e.g., autonomous construction robots, climate-resilient crops). ☑️ EIC Accelerator: €634 million for start-ups and SMEs to commercialise and scale innovations, with investments up to €10 million. €250 million of this funding for early-stage companies in sectors such as AI and future mobility. ☑️ EIC Transition: €98 million to turn research results into innovation opportunities. ☑️ Increased access to business acceleration services for emerging companies from ‘widening countries’. Strong parallels between this green transition and #SmartSpecialisation emerge in shared elements such as #sustainability, environmental priorities, societal challenges, and digitalisation. A new #JRC study investigates regional research and innovation capacities for the green transition through the lens of Smart Specialisation in the Western Balkan region. It proposes #policy actions to leverage these capacities within both national frameworks and collaborative initiatives.
