Education

A project aimed at educating people about sustainable food use and raising awareness of household food consumption.

About us

Every year, Europe produces about 2.7 billion tonnes of waste. Consequently, separate waste collection is one of the EU's most important goals for the the coming period, while waste management is an important both economic and environmental factor. Food production continues to play an important role in many areas and also contributes to economic growth in the EU. Food systems, from production through processing and consumption to the recycling of food waste (FW), play an important role in the context of the EU's focus on employment and environmental sustainability and are at the heart of the sustainable development agenda. In terms of performance, mixed biowaste systems typically capture only 10-30 kg per capita per year. On the other hand, nearly 90 million tons of food is lost every year in the EU alone, or 173 kg per person. The main idea of the project is to create and maintain a behavioral change among young people and the general public towards FW prevention and reduction. Impact: promote education on sustainable food management and raise awareness of household food consumption among the younger generation and the public. 🌍💚 Did you know that food that is no longer suited for human consumption can be used as animal feed? In 2018, the Commission adopted EU guidelines to help valorize, as animal feed, food no longer marketable for human consumption (e.g. unsold bread, broken biscuits). The guidelines clarify how relevant EU rules related to food, feed and waste apply in order to facilitate the use of such food resources whilst ensuring safety of the feed chain, animal and human health. 🐻🌲 Discover the Zarnesti Brown Bear Sanctuary in Romania! 🌲🐻 Nestled in the heart of Romania, the Zarnesti Brown Bear Sanctuary provides a safe and natural home for bears rescued from captivity (over 100 individuals). These bears have often endured heartbreaking conditions, and Zarnesti offers them a chance to live their lives with dignity. But how do they feed all these hungry bears? 🤔 It takes a lot of food to keep these magnificent creatures healthy! Thankfully, the sanctuary relies on the generosity of private donors who understand the importance of their work. Every donation, big or small, helps ensure these bears have full bellies. Fighting food waste, one bear at a time 💪 In addition to private donations, Zarnesti has partnered with several retail stores that donate food that might otherwise go to waste. This not only helps the bears but also reduces the environmental impact of food waste. It's a win-win! 🐾🤎🍉Want to help? You can make a difference in the lives of these rescued bears! Visit the Zarnesti Brown Bear Sanctuary website to learn how you can donate or adopt a bear. Every bit of support counts! #ZarnestiBrownBearSanctuary | Facebook #ZarnestiBrownBearSanctuary

Today, we are introducing some excellent examples of food waste reduction from Santa Maria, a company operating in the Estonian market. What steps are they taking to practically reduce food waste? 🌱 Reducing Production Waste: In the company’s factories, there is always a focus on finding ways to cut down on production waste. Specific annual targets are set to minimize waste, and progress is continuously monitored. Their approach includes repurposing food waste as animal feed or converting it into biogas. For example, all tortilla and taco production leftovers go to feeding pigs. 🏡 Reducing Waste at Home: Efforts are also made to help customers reduce waste in the kitchen. By developing products, packaging, and recipes that utilize the entire contents, they aim to keep as much as possible out of the trash. Packaging plays a key role in this effort. 💡 Inspiring Change: A few years ago, they launched the campaign "Tasty School Lunches – The Best Food is the Food That Gets Eaten" to reduce food waste in school cafeterias. The goal was to inspire everyone to limit waste. 🏭 Reducing Waste in Factories, Warehouses, and Offices: Beyond food waste, the company strives to minimize other types of waste in factories, warehouses, and offices. They continuously seek ways to increase recycling and collaborate with waste management companies to recycle materials used in packaging. Together, we can make a significant impact! 🌍💚 #FoodWaste #Sustainability #ZeroWaste #EcoFriendly #FoodProduction #ReduceReuseRecycle The source: https://lnkd.in/dATkX2zs
