Dr. Lamy, 3rd-year ER chief resident at the time, shares how his life experiences led to medicine and what he's experienced while providing care in the Emergency Department of the Mirebalais University Hospital (HUM). Dr. Lamy graduated from his residency in Emergency Medicine in September 2024 and continues to work at HUM. In 2023 alone, Zanmi Lasante received 32,545 patients to be hospitalized at our various sites across Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite. In many of these cases, patients like the one Dr Lamy describes in the video, often come first through the doors of the Emergency Room, looking for care. "This center will play a crucial role in providing oxygen first to the Thomonde Health Center and the health institutions in the Central Plateau, thus strengthening our ability to save lives and improve the health of the communities we serve," shared Dr. Wesler Lambert, Zanmi Lasante Executive Director.  The Oxygen Production Plant in Thomonde, funded by the Agence Française de Développement (ADF) and Partners In Health (PIH), aims to provide a reliable and sustainable supply of medical-grade oxygen. This facility is expected to benefit all ZL sites in the Bas-Artibonite and Central Plateau, requiring an average of 850 oxygen cylinders per month. "My son's condition improved. He was worse before. His feet were swollen. His belly... So, his belly hasn't gone down completely yet, but the size of the feet went down. His face was swollen but it's also gotten down. It wasn't like that before (getting admitted at the hospital). They take good care of him here." Alphenès, originally from Boucan Carré, rushed to the ER at the Bon Sauveur Hospital in Cange to get his 4-year-old son Phare-Edentz admitted. He was devastated to learn that his son's condition was severe malnutrition. But he was also grateful that his boy is able to get treated there. Malnutrition is the leading cause of death for children under 5. In Haiti, 1 in 4 children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Around 11,000 children under the age of 5 suffer from acute malnutrition in Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite, where Zanmi Lasante delivers care.
