💡 UPSURGE - Observatory visit in the 18th District of Budapest On the first day of spring, under beautiful sunshine, nearly 30 residents from the 18th District visited the Marcell György Observatory’s instrument garden as part of the Upsurge-project. Guided by meteorologist Róbert Tóth, we explored the 150-year-old institution’s history, discovered historic measuring instruments, and learned about past and present meteorological tools. This global virtual discussion brought together a high-level, diverse panel of experts, including policymakers, scientists, urban planners, artists, and sustainability professionals. Together, they tackled a pressing question: The EU Nature Restoration Law is here, and cities have the power to lead this transformation. But do we have what it takes to make it work? 🌱 🚨 With the new law coming into effect in 2025, this conversation is more urgent than ever! We are incredibly proud that our colleague Ferenc Albert Szigeti represents BURST this inspiring virtual conversation! Sharing his expertise on behalf of @TeAM HUb, the Hungarian #NetworkNature Hub for Nature-based Solutions he delved into the practical implications of the EU Nature Restoration Law and urban biodiversity strategies. 🐝 💡 Did you know? The final version of the EU Nature Restoration Law no longer includes the goal of increasing urban green spaces. 📗 NbS EduWORLD 💡 How is NBS EduWORLD shaping urban and rural sustainability across Europe? As part of the NBS EduWORLD initiative for 2024, we launched a practice-oriented education program in Hungary with 30 landscape architecture students from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in partnership with the Municipality of Jászberény to address stormwater management challenges in six urban districts. ❓ But the work doesn’t stop there! How is NBS EduWORLD transforming other cities? 🇬🇷 GREECE 🇬🇷 In Patras, the Water House Environmental Centre is embracing future education by integrating digital tools that enhance learning about NBS. In 2024, they made significant strides by selecting a digital supplier and preparing for interactive, mixed-reality applications that will be available online and offline. These innovations will enable more flexible, immersive learning experiences for a wider audience in 2025. In Lykovrysi-Pefki, the municipality developed programmes for schools and residents, focusing on tree planting and intergenerational learning. In 2024, they launched a campaign to integrate NbS into education, fostering municipal collaboration. A kickoff event in November introduced NBS to 50 participants. In 2025, three school-based NBS interventions will be implemented under the "Adopt your tree" campaign, encouraging long-term environmental stewardship. 🇪🇸 SPAIN 🇪🇸 The City of Zaragoza in Spain transforms schoolyards into greener, more inclusive spaces. Through the Adapta tu Patio and NBS EduWORLD, two schools were selected to implement naturalization projects, with tree planting scheduled for February 2025. Additionally, the project will expand to four more schools next year, and a Schoolyard Naturalization Guide will be developed to share best practices and support the broader adoption of NbS throughout the city. 🇷🇴 ROMANIA 🇷🇴 In Bucharest, Romania, the Technical University of Civil Engineering is engaging the community through workshops, resources, and competitions aimed at raising awareness about NBS. In 2024, they produced 400 NBS awareness booklets and 20 posters to educate 3,500 citizens. Key initiatives include a children's competition, an urban game, and a hands-on workshop in a community garden.
