Obsidian Wine Co. is the winery owned by the Molnár family in California. In 1973, Nicholas Molnar planted Poseidon Vineyard at the southern extreme of Napa Carneros, on what had been grazing land since the time of the missionaries. He was among the first to farm this area which at the time was considered too cool to ripen wine grapes. For three decades, he grew chardonnay & pinot noir for the top sparkling wine houses in Napa Valley.  All their wines are aged exclusively in KADAR barrels, the image shows the first barreling of 2024. At Kádár Hungary, our casks—commonly referred to as casks for their substantial size over five hectoliters— crafted from the finest oak sourced from the Inner Carpathian Volcanic Mountains.  They are equipped with 6, 8, or 10 dip-galvanized or painted hoops, ensuring robust structural integrity and longevity. The attention to detail extends to manual finishing, which guarantees each cask not only meets but exceeds the highest standards of craftsmanship. ☆ Moreover, our casks are coated with a food-compliant varnish to safeguard the quality and purity of the wine inside. The standard fittings on these casks are particularly noteworthy: they include AISI 316 stainless steel fittings, an oval or semi-oval door for easier access, a choice of ball or butterfly valves (Macon/DIN/Garola – 40/50mm) for precise flow control, an emptying pipe, a sampling tap, and a sturdy wooden support. 📹 Watch how our colleague carves the barrel head to the specified size, after putting a piece of rush between each oak stave. The dimension depends, of course, on the capacity of the barrel.  The staves are made of high-quality tight-grained sessile oak, seasoned for at least 24 months, like the body itself.
