  • Arizona State University's Rob & Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health stands out as one of the most advanced LEED-certified buildings on campus, achieving LEED Platinum status. Buro Happold's multidisciplinary engineering team worked with ARCHITEKTON, Grimshaw and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. to develop strategies to achieve ambitious sustainability goals, including minimizing embodied carbon. The structural design incorporates voided slab systems to reduce concrete volume and embodied carbon, complemented by high cement replacement targets throughout the building. Laboratory spaces feature modular planning for flexibility, allowing future modifications for specific research needs. The organized design ensures efficient delivery of MEP services with dedicated equipment for each function. Our energy analytics, lighting, and facade teams worked together to balance daylighting and solar gain, optimizing thermal performance and maintaining excellent daylighting and connectivity to the outside. • Do you want to transform the world? The built environment is how to do it.   Buro Happold allows its people to build a personal and professional legacy. What could be more impactful than physically shaping cities and places for decades to come?   Today, meet Victoria Yanovska.   Victoria, who is based in Berlin, began at Buro Happold working within our HR team in Warsaw. During her time in Warsaw and then Berlin, she developed an interest in the sustainability side of Buro Happold’s work. It was the immersion in the work undertaken by Buro Happold in the sustainability, climate and ESG space that sparked an interest in Victoria. She has now followed that interest to transform her career, and now works as a senior sustainability consultant, and is also a co-founder of the Ukrainian Green Building Council (UGBC).   “I’m passionate about the built environment. Through the course of our lives, we spend so much of our time within buildings, and they are one of the most important areas in our lives. That is why it is important to invest our knowledge and creativity to improve the built environment and make it a ‘happy and healthy’ place.” Victoria Yanovska, senior sustainability consultant at Buro Happold.   Learn more about Victoria's journey and find more career stories on our website.   #BuroHappold #Engineering #Consultancy #Advisory #BuiltEnvironment #Construction #Legacy #Careers #Berlin

  • Does higher lighting contrast always create better spaces for museum visitors? And how does lighting shape the way they navigate cultural spaces? These are some of the questions to which a recent Buro Happold research project into inclusive lighting design at cultural venues has found the answers. Paula Longato, Buro Happold team lead for Lighting Design Europe and her team, in partnership with the Institute for Design Strategies at the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe; the DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung, Germany’s largest workplace exhibition in Dortmund; Zumtobel Lighting, Sentistic and SOUR, carried out extensive desk research and practical testing in a real museum environment over two and half years. The aim was to gain an understanding of how lighting can create more accessible environments, particularly for visually impaired individuals and potentially those with various neurocognitive profiles. Curious to learn more lighting strategies for inclusive design? • Did you know that glaciers store 69% of the earth’s freshwater? Today is #WorldWaterDay and this year’s theme is ‘Glacier Preservation’. #Glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates due to rising global temperatures which leads to rising sea levels, posing a growing flood risk to coastal regions. Madeline Witney and Matthew Vaughan-Shaw from our water team look in more detail at this precious resource. They emphasise how rising sea levels cause coastal flooding, erosion, and loss of wetlands, making coastal communities more vulnerable. Low-lying regions, like the Maldives, face the risk of becoming uninhabitable. What can we do? ◾Limit global temperature rise to slow glacier melt. ◾Invest in resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions. ◾Design new coastal developments to account for sea level rise. The United Nations, as promoters of World Water Day, has described glacier preservation as a survival strategy. We know what our survival tools look like, so let’s work together to use them.
