Since 2023, Kaleka has supported around 200 independent farmers in adopting regenerative agriculture in oil palm plantations in Central Kalimantan. My colleague Riyadh Assegaf took a video capturing the soil quality between the control and regenerative agriculture plots. Dark brown or black soil indicates higher organic matter or fertile soil. We also found a higher count of earthworms in the regenerative agriculture plots. Suratmi suddenly had to take care of a 3-hectare oil palm plantation when her husband passed away, with little to no experience and knowledge in agriculture. By joining a farmer group in her village, she eagerly learnt various agricultural practices. One of them was regenerative agriculture, which she later implemented on her plantation.   Suratmi’s story shows the struggle of a female farmer learning agriculture, while simultaneously, upholding her late husband’s vision.
