“It’s not so much the money you earn,” says Mastercard’s Troy Dennis. “It’s what you do with that money.” About 30% of HBCU students move up at least two income quintiles from their parents by age 30 – nearly double that for students at other colleges and universities. That’s a great track record, but could additional financial education for these students create even more of an impact? As part of its investment in HBCUs to create opportunities for building generational wealth, Mastercard and financial app Goalsetter are partnering on the HBCU Financial Freedom Project, a study to identify the effectiveness of financial education, including savings and investment, as it relates to financial decision-making. Dennis joined Goalsetter founder Tanya Van Court to kick off the study in Atlanta, where students from Spelman and Morehouse Colleges and Clark Atlanta University will take part. “You’re going to do amazing things,” she told students. “But you can do amazing things that go broke if you don’t know about money." #financialplanning #futureofwork #financialeducation #inclusion
