The Economy of Ego and the Real Price of Hosting the Olympics 🏆    The economic impact of hosting the Olympics has long been a contentious issue, as costs often far exceed revenues, leaving many host cities in debt. Historically, hosting was manageable, primarily for affluent countries, but the financial strain became evident with events like the 1976 Montreal Olympics, which resulted in significant debt. The costs surged further in recent years, with cities like Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, and Beijing spending tens of billions on infrastructure and security. Despite anticipated economic benefits such as job creation and increased tourism, research suggests that these gains are often overstated or short-lived, with many cities struggling to maintain expensive, underutilized venues long after the games.     The 2024 Paris Olympics introduced measures to combat this trend, focusing on sustainability and cost-effectiveness as part of the IOC's Olympic Agenda 2020. Paris utilized 95% existing or temporary facilities, reducing expenses and environmental impact. However, even with such efforts, the city still faced substantial infrastructure costs, including $4.5 billion for projects like the Olympic Village. These initiatives show promise for more sustainable hosting practices, yet the financial burden remains a significant concern, with Paris slightly exceeding its budget projections 💸    To make hosting more manageable, economists advocate for reforms such as reducing the bidding process's emphasis on grandiose plans and promoting cost-sharing by the IOC. Some suggest selecting a permanent host city to reuse infrastructure, while others argue that low- and middle-income countries should avoid hosting altogether. Despite the financial risks, the desire to host remains strong, driven by national pride and aspirations, as seen in Indonesia's expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics in its new capital, IKN.    Looking to explore this topic further? Last week was packed with networking opportunities, and we had the honor of participating in the prestigious Tech in Asia Conference 2024! 🎉 Our Managing Director, Darryl Ratulangi, took part in a compelling panel session titled Has Indonesia Lost Its Shine for Investors? He and fellow panelists shared insights on Indonesia's evolving investment landscape. They emphasized that while Indonesia remains a vibrant market, investor sentiment has shifted, with more cautious capital deployment compared to 3–4 years ago, especially for larger funding rounds. As a Venture Debt / Investment Analyst, you will play a pivotal role in sourcing, evaluating, and managing venture debt investments.
